It's official... The silver kangaroo has a security feature!!!!! Yea.

http://www.perthmintbullion.com/au/...a_s_First_Four_Nines_Silver_Bullion_Coin.aspx

the new coin is struck from 1oz of 99.99% (four nines) pure silver a first for the nation's official bullion coin program.

A Perth Mint first, the coin's reverse also includes an authentication feature. In the form of a micro-laser engraved letter 'A' which is within the first A of AUSTRALIA, it is only detectable under a magnifying glass. The authentication feature is designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited, providing peace of mind to our customers.

On top of these outstanding qualities, the 2016 1oz Australian Kangaroo silver bullion coin will represent exceptional value for money. Indeed, it will be Australia's most economically priced silver bullion coin when it is officially released this coming 21 September 2015.

Will the Perth Mint be selling magnifying glasses for customers to check the authenticity of their coins? :/

I was at the launch dinner tonight for this coin in Chicago a few hours ago.

Probably the most exciting aspect is that it will be sold in a "mini monster box" of 250oz (ten tubes of 25oz).

One of the specially packaged launch samples from the dinner (the box is not a retail product). I figure if they've released the news on the blog I can show the coin off :) Sorry about the crappy hotel room lighting.

Mini me monster box !

Happy snot bubbles batman, if only.

Just so there's no confusion, the coin is only pictured in a capsule because it's from the launch packaging - normal production coins will be in tubes much like the Crocodile coins, no capsules.

That seems obvious given it's the "most economically priced silver bullion coin". If it came in a capsule and it costs less than those other funny animals that come in tubes, then it would be a bargain.
I wonder how much the capsules cost the mint?

Let's not talk the premium price up with capsules... it has four 9999's, does this refer to the number of milkspots?

So this is like the croc and funnel web? With changing pic every year. Or like the american eagle or maple. Same one, different date

And why was the launch dinner for this coin in chicago?? What a random a** place

Perhaps it's because that's where the ANA world's fair of money is being held.

My understanding is that the design will be the same every year, and *unlimited* quantities. This is Australia's new ASE equivalent, but in 25oz tubes in a 250oz box (yes, the box stacks). The dinner wasn't the opportune place to snap a photo of the mini monster box example being shown around. Each monster box will be serialised as well, and it is blue with a clear lid, with clear tubes, so you can see inside. It is supposed to fit into a standard safe deposit box as well, but I guess that depends on the size of the SDB.

It's the "bulk" bullion coin offering from the mint designed to compete with ASEs/Philharmonics/Britannias/SMLs etc on the world stage. Perth Mint has built a new production line at Hay St in a new building exclusively for this product, and it's what many distributors have been asking for - a tubed/boxed Australian bullion silver coin. SMLs and ASEs outsell Kookaburras by magnitudes in Australia - if you're buying in bulk, compare the density of a tube of ASEs or SMLs to a roll of Kookaburras. 1oz Kooks don't come in a convenient bulk form with their encapsulated roll/100 coin tray/300 coin carton packaging. Perth simply didn't have an unlimited mintage boxed silver coin offering in the market that could be struck at a price point needed to compete. The new facility gives them this capacity.

The launch was held in Chicago at the ANA World's Fair of Money, the largest coin/bullion show on the North American calendar. There's simply no equivalent in Australia that's suitable, and I believe the primary target market for this coin is the US. The launch was hosted by CNT, Perth Mint's exclusive bullion distributor for gold and platinum bullion products in the US, who are likely to be the single largest customer for this coin. It's hard to comprehend how big the US market for Perth Mint product is without being there to see it - The Hon Nick Minchin, Australian Consul-General spoke at the launch.

Will be available in September. Not sure what this means for the future of releases of tubed coins like Crocodiles and Spiders in 500oz boxes, but I can't see why 1m mintage one-off coins won't still be produced in the 500oz boxes.

We're all awaiting the pricing to be announced, but early indications are that it will be very competitive, and priced well under ASEs, and in a much more compact storage format. 250oz box size also means you can buy in more convenient increments - say 250oz or 750oz of sealed coins, instead of just 500oz.

With this being the first year of issue, and assuming they'll be minted until the very end of 2016, with an unlimited mintage..

Any guesses to the final declared mintage?

I suppose what condition they're in once they hit the end-customers' hands will play a decent role..

Rated MS.9999 on the MilkSpot probability scale?

Maybe this is the new direction? Transition to bulk bullion coins and, if they get spots, just claim they are low quality bullion coins so people shouldn't complain.

Probably getting the blanks from RCM and even a percentage struck at RCM or why else would they go to 4 9,s with this coin? Are they going 4 9,s with all the PM silver coins?

That's a very good question for Bron. I thought that PM was a blanks producer, but your observation is quite appropriate. Why 4 9s?

We are making these ourselves, we don't buy in blanks. I don't generally have much to do with the coin side, the 9999 will probably have to be across all coins depending on how they run the new blank factory extension (which is nuts BTW with a massive vacuum annealing thingymabob, you guys better buy a lot of these as I don't know how we are going to pay those machines off).

Glad the construction is over.

Thinks of how many man power this going to cut,
I reckon 5 years this will pays off.
