You have most likely already heard about that budding young investigative journalist, Leah McGrath Goodman, using good old fashioned foot work (Looking up names in a phone book.) and tracking down the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. If not her article is a bloody great read, and also very convincing.

Less than a day later, the expected press scrums form outside the front of Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto's home, as he is coaxed from his front door with the promise of a free lunch courtesy of Associated Press.

"Okay where is my lunch ticket" he says.
Not something you'd ever expect to hear from a man sitting on an estimated 1 million Bitcoins!
Many in the crypto community worried that when the creator of Bitcoin would be discovered it might destroy the currency, as the public shifts it's focus to the creator rather than what he created. Even core Bitcoin dev team contributor, Gregory Maxwell (aka nullc on reddit.) recently suggested:

But less than a 5% drop in Bitcoin's price, and a day later, has the real Satashi Nakamoto surfaced and posted a comment on his original posting & release of the Bitcoin White Paper from way back in February 11, 2009, to prove otherwise!?
The significance of this reply should not be lost. Nothing has been heard from Satoshi Nakamoto since 2011. For him to post a reply on this page, his original post for the release of Bitcoin White Paper; That he and Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto are not the same person; This is the real Satoshi Nakamoto sending a message to those who are searching for him, that they are not even close.

.
For the past 40 years, Satoshi Nakamoto has not used his birth name in his daily life. At the age of 23, after graduating from California State Polytechnic University, he changed his name to "Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto," according to records filed with the U.S. District Court of Los Angeles in 1973. Since then, he has not used the name Satoshi but instead signs his name "Dorian S. Nakamoto."

information about the identity of the creator would be harmful to the Bitcoin ecosystem. All humans have quirks and flaws. People opposed to Bitcoin, and conditioned by trust based system to evaluate based on reputation rather than merit, would search out minuta from the creators life to distort and use to discredit the system. Scorned ex-lovers, kindergarten teachers, an unpaid traffic ticket, failure-to or excessive participation in local elections, sexual proclivities, racial background... all invoked to make whatever points people wish to make. "Bitcoin's creator didn't have a degree from a prestigious university, and got Cs in school, so Bitcoin must be flawed!"
Then we'd have the risk of the public hanging on his every word many institutions suffer founder's syndrome where the respect for their creator fixes them as a single point of failure in an organization which has long since grown past their ability to manage. The creator of the system might find it difficult to comment on anything without having his words micro-analyzed, and the purpose of Bitcoin might be undermined by centralization around the creators position instead of more equable processes.
