Round 50c - Please explain

Something that I've pondered for awhile - I don't get the point of collecting/stacking them.

- They don't have a numi value (that I'm aware of).
- They're only 80%

Its not like average stackers can purify them at home so talking about equivalent silver content always seems a bit stupid to me. If you want to use that argument you could collect dirt - get enough of it and its 'equivalent' to an ounce of silver....


If you want to stack silver - Why would you buy less than 999 ?
 
because of stop loss.. if silver goes to $1/oz, you can go to the bank and get $1.50 back, as compared to kooks/koalas/lunars where you'll only get $1 back.. so still 50c ahead

Got it one! I stack dirt.
 
and they jingle, try it with a bunch of round 50s and then a bunch of cupronickel coins and notice the difference
 
Senior Citizens buy them!

It brings back memories of 1966 when they were Kid's... "Secretly" borrowing a coin from Mum's purse to buy lollies and Fanta. :)
 
Easily recognisable
Cheap to buy compared to PM 1oz
Less chance of counterfeit due to smaller value
Great size coin - not too big, not too small
Don't need to treat them carefully, chuck them round & still maintain their value.

Of those points only two and four make sense.
-Buy one round/coin or three fifties- no difference if you're accumulating ounces.
- agreed, why go to the effort
-Technically one ounce of silver in fifties is bulkier since you have to factor in the nickel
- agreed no point keeping up appearances

Look like treasure for the win.
 
I stack Canadian 80% coins. they have a silver melt value which is as good as anything to investors. I like the canadian silver dollars at .6 oz......5 of them gives you 3oz.

Are they worth less because someone still has to refine them? no.

Circulation coins are recognizable, easy to sell and purity backed by the government. also alot less fakes from what i can see.

if i could buy the florins I would but being in canada gives a great oppurtunity to get canadian silver under the U.S. 90% radar :D
 
good as change / filler in a trade when you need something smaller than 1oz or 1/2 oz - i.e ill give you 1oz rabbit for your 1oz kook + 1 round 50
 
To me the most obvious advantage of 50c pieces is that it is circulating decimal currency. As an example, I picked up 200 yesterday at $8.50 each. My balance sheet shows I have only $100. The coins are only worth more when I choose to sell them.
 
Agreed... It's just a popularity thing.. I stated in an earlier thread the pre decimal florins are unconditionally a better investment which i still maintain given there is no chance if getting a rare one and its high mintage and common in unc

Simple demand supply and. Being popular are the only answers as to why such a generic round would have the premiums it does..

They do have other reasons for being used as an Invstment but that's secret sqrurril stuff
 
The have a hard bottom of 50c
Easier to divide a stack of 1966 rounds than a 1kg bar
They may not attract CGT (Depending on when and why you obtained them)
 
I have some Canadian Silver Dollars as they are easy and affordable to buy, I like the history along with it, and the fact that its easy to store as its junk silver, and did I mention easy to sell.....
