Roll of kooks vs a roll of dragons

Would it better to buy a roll of 20 x 1 ounce 2012 kooks or a roll of 20 x 1 ounce dragons? Not to flip but to put away for a rainy day.

Taking the lower mintage into account, is the higher premium on the dragons (or rabbits/mice/tigers) worth it? Kooks seem better value to me given they trade closer to spot.

Secondly would you go for 30 x 1 ounce coins or a 1 kg coin? Pros and cons for each one?
 
Kooks, dragons are inflated.

30x 1oz coin vs 1x kg would have to do with the percentage breakdown of my stack and what my exit strategy was.
 
and 1kg coins seem to be harder to move if you need fast cash. but if you dont want to pay the premium for the 1oz, i reckon 10ozers are a nice compromise.

you lose about 1oz in terms of the price difference between 1kg and the equivalent weight in 10oz coins. but thats well worth it IMO

So liquidity is better with 1 and 10 ounce coins. Gotcha.

So with gradual sell-off the one ouncers would be better?

Yes but.... what is your exit strategy?

If you are planning to sell to other people on this forum or ebay then 1oz is much easier to sell than a kg.

What if silver tripples in price? 1oz might be $100 vs $3k for 1kg.

If you're planning to sell back to PM or a dealer then you might get a better return based on a greater number of ozs....
 
The 1oz Dragons will always have a bigger premium than the Kooks but imho the Kooks are a good buy because the mint has already sold their allocation.

That would have to be one of the quickest selling Kooks to have sold out before the year has even begun (2012)
 
I don't think the Kooks have reached a status amongst collectors like Lunars at this point. However I think they may be a bit of a sleeper. I know some of the early years there would be very few in tact original rolls ?

Does anyone know what the first year for rolls were and does anyone have some ? That would be real interesting to know.

Short Term Lunars, Long term potential sleepers. The other side could be their future value and people getting them slabbed. While they are bullion you may see this happen, so an unbroken role that hasn't been handled and traded a few times could yield some good results.
 
Best i keep my roll of 2012 1oz kooks extra protected. Who knows what tey will fetch in 10/15/20yrs.

Any thoughts on what to use to protect the plastic seal?

I think the mice will be a better return than either as you can still pick them up relatively cheaply (compared to the other lunars) but will be dragged higher by the other lunars as time goes by. I'm still a bit weary of the dragons because so many people have a stash they are waiting to flip as prices increases - slowing the rise as well as the fact that they are selling for 2 times spot now. It will take a big rise in spot or a sudden change in numismatic value to increase the price - neither of which I can see happening in the short to medium term.

Cling wrap! Then protect the cling wrap with bubble wrap. Then put it into a vacuum bag and finally in a box. I think that's should be sufficient :P

If you can get collectable bullion premiums at the issue price in line with kooks, it's common sense to go with the lunar option.

You're essentially getting a 'collectors premium' on top for free.

Worst case scenario, you break even with the kooks based simply on bullion value.

Far more likely you reap a collector profit on top for free.

I have a bunch of Lunar 1oz Tigers I bought at issue price (20 something per ounce) only a year back.

They are now worth a lot more than a 2010 Kook, I assure you.
