No, now is not as good a time as any, but it is better than the first half of 2008 was.
If you are not sure of the share market, then a managed fund would probably be best - effectively paying someone who should know, to invest for you.

These are people who have advocated buying silver at any price over the last 2 years while it dropped by 35%.
Meanwhile, the ASX has increased by 25% over the same period.
The opportunity cost (loss)? 60% plus dividends.
Lets say total of around 70%.![]()
