Remember your first silver buy?

Alright, here’s a fun, thread you can drop straight in:

I was thinking back to when I first started stacking silver — spot was about $18 AUD per ounce at the time. Felt expensive back then… funny how perspective changes

I remember hovering over the buy button, wondering if I was late to the party or getting a bargain. Turns out, that moment is something every stacker seems to remember.

So let’s make this a bit of a nostalgia (and humble brag) thread:

  • What price was silver when you first started buying?
  • What was your first purchase? Coins, bars, junk, something weird?
  • Did you think it was cheap… or did it feel scary at the time?
Always fun to see how different everyone’s “starting line” was. New stackers, old hands, lurkers — jump in

I bought a 5 oz Perth Mint bar from Southern Cross coins and Currency under the Southern Cross hotel in Bourke St Melbourne. The cost was $16 from memory and that was back in 1976. I could write a book on all the rare stuff I've purchased over the years

Great thread!

I bought a 1kg PM bar for $1506 as my very first silver purchase..
She's no longer with me and I reckon I made a couple of slabs out of it but Jeepers, she's possibly a house deposit now ...

Sub AUD700 for my first Ag kg and like @Antalon it took a while to press the button that first time. They were the days.

Fav purchases. One from ABC of all places when they used to have buy backs....Mint 1oz Maples for AUD22.00 each and 2) back in 2019 I bought a swag of US Silver Eagles from BN buybacks who'd had old mate come in, who'd done some midnight gardening back in 2013/4 wanting to sell his monster box. Perfect condition for sub AUD30.00 an oz.

8th of June 2011, bought a kilo silver bar from the Perth Mint

Paid $32.94 per oz back then, all up it was $1203 after adding postage and insurance

Not sure why I went big for my first purchase of silver, felt like the right thing to do at the time

That bar is no longer with me though, traded it for a mixed lot of silver coins of various sizes instead

Been stacking ever since

Great thread…my first buy was some kooks & kangas from Perth Mint back in 2014. I still have the kooks and they are currently returning almost 16% yield YOY.

My introduction post on SS was about getting some 21st gifts for my kids just being born. I put aside a set of silver & gold lunars from their birth years which I plan to give them on their 18th and 21st birthdays.

First purchases was on this site from fat penguin.
About $21 or $22
Bought a heap of xag 1ox bars and elemetal 1oz bars. They were my favourite and do t come up often

First purchase was a tube of roo's from gumtree, spot was mid $20's. Soon after that was a bunch of old 5oz Silvertown bars from a dealer, that shop closed their doors almost 10 years ago. I was recently divorced and stressed with no real idea of how to preserve what wealth I had left.

I think ive said this before but it was a $100 bag of a Ben Frank and Walking Liberty mix of half dollars for $1370 from JM Bullion.
I think spot was around 16 bucks.
A few days after I placed the order, spot dropped 50 cents and I about crapped myself and I didnt tell my wife a fkn thing about it.
I was a little ashamed and felt like maybe I did something stupid with that cash. I second guessed myself.
It was my first lesson in stacking and I told myself it was fine and to keep buying more.
I told myself that silver under 20 bucks is a good deal.
I got another one for $1190 during the Covid crash.
Now that same bag is almost 9k.

Back in 2010 I purchased some Pamp Suisse products at prices below. Still got the 1 ounce bars after 16 years of holding. Think the 1 kg bars paid for my driveway.
