Regretted a swap??

Gold Phantom

Hi all,
I have always been reluctant to do any type of swap out of fear of regretting my decision later.
Anyone here do a swap that they ended up regretting?
Cheers,
GP

Yeah, once or twice, but I suppose it depends on a number of factors. If you take the view "silver is silver, and gold is gold", then really, ounce for ounce, there's not much to regret. But if you swap for something "fashionable", which then loses its popularity (and then its premium) for some reason, that can be a bit of a downer. But I try not to get too emotionally attached to what is basically a chunk of metal, as I think that's a bit of a trap... Having said that, some pieces certainly are things of beauty... :)

Cheers,

+1.

Also have swapped before and regretted it, the postage was a killer and in hindsight my swap was quite pointless.

Stuff happens but you move on and there will always be good and bad swaps (more good than bad!).

Swaps are a zero sum game in terms of good and bad.

What turns out a good swap for you is a bad one for the other party, and bad for you is good for other.

On average in the long term you'll make as many good as bad.

So really there is no point to swapping in net terms.

That's assuming everybody values something exactly the same.

For example I may place more value on pandas than ASE even though the $$$ value is the same. The other person may place more value on ASEs (only one guy on this forum...but still!). Both of us come out 'feeling ahead'.

Also, something may be a bad swap for now but the stuff in question may appreciate in value in the future and come out ahead.

So no, I don't agree that swaps are a zero sum game, unlike FOREX.

We're talking different things.

I'm talking about gold to silver, or other metal for metal swaps based on monetary value.

You're talking about emotional swaps for collectibility or other measures.

Well, the original question was simply have you regretted any swaps. Both valid points of view.

You should have been a teenager in the sixties or a swinger in the seventies. We were always swapping!

its about balance, you may want to buy or swap your silver for gold piece.

you just try to buy from cheapest possible seller, but sometimes the person sell in bulk, so you may end up with items you already own, and do not value it as highly, so this will give you a way out by swap.
swap of same kind will not generate much benefit, bar for bar or coins for coins.

but if there is a difference in two different markets the monetary values placed on the items, then there is money to be shares between 2 swap parties, one party may get better results, another may be a tip better off.
so long as both parties feels the benefits then it is worth doing the swap.

Currently I won't swap when there's postage involved (unless the added value is offsetting the postage cost). It just seems a bit odd to spend $10 on postage to gain the same amount of stuff.

there can be as big a difference as 9 oz of silver presented for swap opportunity. the international postal cost both ways may be 2.5 oz worth of silver, then there are still 6.5 oz of silver to share, else no point to swap if the difference is as low as 3-5 oz of silver. at current prices.

It may work only both are winners to start with, if one has bought the metal near the peak. its a NO NO.

The only swap I regretted was going from wearing shorts to skirts, but once they sewed in the anchovie it all seemed real
