I am confused, please help.

The fake round is on the verifier??

Does it say 99.9%?

No bar in the box below.

Is that how a fake is detected?

yeah....by the looks of the test. your fake coin is almost 100% real..?

That test was on a REAL 99.9% silver coin as a control test. Test on the fakes was not photographed. Monopolize did comment on each photo

Does this device recognise each and every coin placed on it.

Or is it programmed only to recognise coins from its own database?

You can set the device to measure 0.999 gold, silver, Pt. Pd, Rh, Cu. You can also set Au, 22k (91%) and 90% as well as Ag 0.925 and 0.9.
Once set the bar needs to between the [ ].

Given that this guy is in Melbourne, the best approach is to take the darn things into Gold stackers for a definitive answer. They may be legit.

The PM varifier has some advantages over XRF as plated items will fail. No need for US. I think these are very unlikely to be real. I think taking them to Goldstackers is an excellent idea.

No problems. I've got stuff there I need to pick up so I'll bring them in, hopefully I'll get a chance to do it tomorrow.

acid test is a good idea if it is plated in anyway the acid will rip off the plating revealing more than likely copper coloured alloy. 5 $ off ebay for the acid bottle.

I used it on a bar I bought years ago when starting out within seconds of the acid hitting the bar there she was copper coloured alloy, so in the bin with the bar :(

be interesting to see what would happen.

good luck with a resolution :)

Since no one seems to have answered your question fully, let me take a try. Not ever owning any kind of PM varifier like the one from Metalytics but having seen a video a while back on it being used, the "Silver - 99.9% Pure" wording that you see in the LCD display is merely an indication of the selector setting. It's not describing the actual physical item being tested but simply indicating the selector setting. What describes the item being tested is only the brackets and the vertical bar within the brackets / arrow outside the brackets below the "Silver - 99.9% Pure" selector setting.

I hope this clears up that part of your confusion.

.

It is very important that we find out if the rounds are real or not. There should be further authentication done as others have suggested. We may learn a couple of things including but not limited to: that either the rounds are real or not and consequently that the PM Verifier can give faulty readings if it turns out the rounds are authentic real silver .

.

make sure you are using the right setting
there is 92.5 Silver, 99.9 Silver and 99.99 Silver on the PMV

Hi all. The rounds weigh 31g, 3mm thick, and 38mm wide. My measuring instruments are not precise though.

Nope, perfectly justified in my opinion. Also protects other potential buyers.

monopolize - "Otis responded initially saying he will provide a partial refund for the transaction but stopped responding to my msgs, and I have had no response from him for over a month. I can see from his profile he has logged on during that time so it's apparent to me he has no intention of making good on the deal.

Interesting item, I think it uses eddy current, but I'm going to fwd it onto my old NDT teacher and see what he says. Good for coins, but not so good for bars being 2mm depth.

For those interested, he's replied and said

"They use eddy-current/ magnetic Induction, to penetrate deeper, so it reads through the box but not deep into the metal like Ultrasonics would do.

If you need to penetrate the whole bar then UT would be necessary."

But with UT you cannot test through packaging or capsules and you will need physical contact using a wet coupling agent too. UT for bars 100%, PMV for smaller/packaged stuff. PMV good for coin dealers.

Popped into Goldstackers today, XRF result:
