Purity of Silver: Perth Mint compared to Scottsdale

Fellow Stackers,

I have been saving and waiting with keen anticipation to purchase several 10oz bullion bars from the Perth Mint due to it being Australian owned and made. However, the purity on their bars are 99.9% compared to the Scottsdale 10oz bars which are 99.999% purity. While I may have to pay extra shipping and a customs fee, should I get the purer silver from Scottsdale or is the difference in purity negligible if I was to sell it at a later date...say 5 - 10 years.

Basically, is there a difference other than numbers?

Even some which are confirmed .9999 are not worth the extra premium as it is too close to call.

there were some Andean Cats which are very pure but they are also produced in a more eco friendly manner so I think that is why they are more expensive, rather than the slight increase in purity.
 
I just checked my PM and Scottsdale bars - they are they same at .999 (ie 99.9%) - the Scottsdale is NOT 99.999%
 
Be it .999 or .99999 it is irrelevant. The only reason they are not marked 100% is because its impossible to be completely certain they have removed all impurities. Hence the .999 markings.

It seems I made a mistake thinking .999 is equivalent to 99.999%

So in essence they are the same. AWESOME!! Aussie owned bars it is then!!

There's three things I know of off the top of my head that are .9999 silver and not .999:

* Credit Suisse Bars
* All the silver bars poured in Japan (.9999 is their standard and they will charge you an assay fee if you try to sell them .999)
* Canadian silver coins

There's probably more but for most of the stuff out there, .999 is good enough!
