Preserving and storing Bars

Hi I just recently started collecting silver and I did have one question that I haven't found an answer for yet.

I'm planning on getting a 100 oz Asahi silver bar (it's the most similar looking to what my parents had years ago) and I was wondering the best way to protect it from tarnish and the like. I know that form fitting cases are impossible for poured bars unless custom made, and the only solution I can think of is to grab a large ziplock bag push the air out and zip it up.

Any thoughts?

DONT STORE IN PLASTIC BAGS ITS BAD FOR THE SILVER. Just leave it out mate. Once in a while put it in a bath with aluminium foil, salt, bicarbonate soda and boiling water works a treat. I do it for all my cast bars.

don't know why many like tarnish. I prefer my silver shiny. Imo tarnish takes away silvers beautiful shiny look.

I keep all of my silver except Scottsdale tombstones shiny. The edges look so good with that oldish look, I'd post a picture if i knew how to

Some manufacturers sell bars sealed in plastic, e.g. Southern Cross and Baird & Co. I also had an old-style Perth Mint 100oz mostly sealed in plastic except for some rips, and it was still pristine under the covered sections.

Food vacuum bags are ok, you can also vacuum it.

Or simply buy silver bar that comes sealed in foil.

PVC bags are not ok.

Yep. Sorry Silverpete I should've been clearer. PVC bags are BAAAAAAAADDDDDD.

On the other side of things, I'm keeping a bar in a brown paper bag to see what happens. So far, after a year, nothing much :)

I'm finding minted Southern Cross bars in their sealed plastic are doing well. My thought is the sealing is at least as effective as keeping a coin in a good quality capsule.
