Just reading on SBS (AAp) that federal pollies are to get a huge rise in salaries. 110k rise pa..PM to get 300k+ rise OPP leader 260K...Amounts determined by so called Independent tribunal..Can't be overturned by parliament...By partisan support :) .

The old adage was pay them peanuts and you get monkeys.

The new adage is pay them fiat and you get bankers.

Now do you believe they are all the same..

Where is my link you ask? I am not into IT electronics.

I saw the article on SBS site ..Google this and you will see its true.

They will claim that the large rise is in lieu of expense...give it a year or two and the expenses will be come creeping back.

I hope the increase salaries don't flow through to all the work force.. :)

Politicians' pay could hit $250,000

October 1, 2011 - 12:59PM

Federal MPs could soon be in line for an exceptionally generous pay boost, with backbench salaries tipped to almost double to around $250,000.

The Federal Remuneration Tribunal is currently looking at a major overhaul of the system, with politicians expected to trade allowances for bigger base pay packets.

Journalist and political commentator Laurie Oakes has told News Limited it could lead to rises of $110,000 for backbenchers, boosting their annual salary to around a quarter of a million dollars a year.

And the pay packets of Prime Minister Julia Gillard, her ministers and also shadow ministers could be a whole lot fatter.

Ms Gillard, who now earns $366,366 annually, could get as much as $650,000 under any new system while Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's could go up from $260,000 to almost $480,000.

All federal politicians currently receive lucrative office and travel entitlements.

But a review, led by former senior public servant Barbara Belcher, recommended earlier this year that the remuneration tribunal weigh up the value of politicians' work and decide whether MPs deserved a pay rise.

It said the tribunal should decide whether some types of positions - such as shadow ministers, who currently get no extra pay - deserve a higher pay bracket.

Legislation passed in June allowed the tribunal free reign to set the base pay of politicians.

Previously, the government was able to reject tribunal recommendations about pay increases.

On Friday the tribunal said it was conducting a comprehensive review of politicians' entitlements.

"As a first step ... the tribunal is conducting, with the assistance of a consultant, an assessment of the work of federal parliamentary backbenchers so as to establish, first, a defensible basis for assessing appropriate remuneration and, secondly, a benchmark for future assessments," it said in a statement.

Its initial report is expected by the end of the year.

Because of the legislation passed in June, the government would not be able to knock back any such increases, even if they were politically unpalatable.

Finance Minister Penny Wong said the issue of politicians' pay was always a difficult one.

But she said the bipartisan move earlier this year to give the decision to an independent tribunal was the right choice.

"I think it's much more sensible if these things are done independently rather than ending up in a sort of parliamentary debate," she said on Sky News.

"I don't know what the remuneration tribunal is proposing to do ... and I do think that's as it should be."

This should annoy me but it doesn't. Everytime I see an incometent fool or someone paid way too much for what thy're doing - i look at ways I can get myself into a similar role. Hey, if they can do it.. so can I!

what do we do, nothing, meanwhile our soldiers fighting a shithouse war are struggling to get paid on time, disgraceful.

I think Big A.D would agree that we should just add another 1% onto the miners to give our politicians a much deserved 1-2 million dollar pay rise :P

Actually, I tend to agree with this quote from Yes Prime Minister:

Jim Hacker said:
Underpaid?! Backbench MPs? Darling, being an MP is a vast subsidised ego-trip. It's a job that needs no qualifications, it has no compulsory hours of work, no performance standards, and provides a warm room, a telephone and subsidised meals to a bunch of self-important windbags and busybodies who suddenly find people taking them seriously because they've go the letters 'MP' after the their name. How can they be underpaid when there's about 200 applicants for every vacancy? You could fill every seat 20 times over even if they paid to do the job!

Ministers and shadow ministers should receive more because they're in senior positions, but backbenchers should be able to serve their constituents pretty comfortably on expenses plus $55k pocket money.

I had better not hear any of them on their high horses talking about corporate CEO's getting inappropriate bonuses. Particularly as most CEO's do something useful for the company they are employed by, while our current crop of politicians would be fired with prejudice from the private sector for being unqualified, ineffective and for selling the company's assets to competitors and being screw-ups and liabilities.

cmon jonesy I sure they donate 10% of their salaries to a good cause, e.g. the labor pardy

These worthless idiots can have huge increases like this but essential services people(police, ambos etc) have to threaten strike action to get a 3% rise. This group of politicians from every party would have to be the most useless ineffective group I have ever seen and should hang their heads in shame not be granting themselves huge pay increases. Watch in a couple of months when the rises are ratified they will say we didn't grant these an independent body felt we were worth it. Also notice as always they released the info on a weekend when something else of note was happening ie AFL / Rugby grand finals, hoping to slide it through with no one noticing.
