I have photographed silver under all kinds of conditions and have never achieved very good results.
Recently I installed an "E-Star" lamp in my ceiling light and got amazingly good results in night conditions.
I placed the bar on a white sheet about 1.5 metres directly below the light.
The photo was taken with my iPad mini.
Here is the first and only attempt at photographing this Engelhard bar.

This is a very accurate representation of the colour and characteristics of this bar.
I photographed a couple of others too with very good results.
So, was this a fluke or is this the Holy Grail?
I don't know, but if you want to try the same light it's: E-Star GLS LED LAMP: LG3/860B22: 600K / Daylight: 250 lm: 3W LED
