May 2 (Reuters) - Sales of gold products by Australia's The Perth Mint slumped to the lowest monthly figure in five years in April as prices remained steady despite strong fundamentals and simmering geopolitical tensions, the company said on Tuesday.

Sales of gold coins and minted bars fell 53 percent in April to 10,490 ounces from 22,232 ounces in March, it said.

Silver sales also fell sharply, slipping 35 percent to 468,977 ounces from 716,283 ounces in March, it said.

"Gold market fundamentals remain strong with simmering geopolitical tensions and continued economic uncertainty set to push sales higher again at a future date," The Perth Mint said in a statement.

Gold prices hit a five-month high in April at $1,295 an ounce amid rising tensions between the United States and North Korea, but values have since fallen about 3 percent. [GOL/]

Gold on Tuesday was holding near a three-week low of $1,253.66 an ounce hit in the previous session as Asian equities rallied and the U.S. dollar gained versus the yen.

The Perth Mint runs the only gold refinery in Australia, the world's No. 2 gold producer after China.

It looks like there is a mistake in the original article published in India Times

Refineries AU.JPG

Not sure if we can call Perth Mint independant or not, but there are two Australian refineries.

Would love to see ABC sales for the period, if they had a similar hit
