Perth Mint & postal charges

Hi

I was thinking of buying some silver bullion from the Perth Mint and asked about the postal charges - they told me $17.50 a kg for air express and 1.1% insurance.
I worked it out and it adds $10 to each 10 oz bar - no matter what quantity you purchase! Would this be correct? You would think that over a certain quantity there would be a reduction or even free post ? I am too far away to walk in and purchase over the counter.

Are you sure it's per kg?

I thought it was standard $17.5 AAE shipping up until a certain amount and that insurance is optional?

They told me a month ago that there was a 3 month wait for any bullion bars so make sure you are NOT going to pay and wait which they said I could do and wait and wait and wait. If you are looking for PM 1kgs or 20oz I can do a few at PM retail prices and Platinum Post is only $16 for 3 KG.
PM me if interested.

I phoned them again and it is 17.50 per kg but insurance is optional. I asked how many 10 oz bars would fit in a one kg bag and she said only 2 x 10 oz bars so there is a lot of packaging, probably not so bad for a larger amount.. I asked time for delivery and she said July.

Sorry - message got up twice by accident - I am on satellite broadband and having trouble with getting on the internet today.

This, along with the fact they changed their policy to not accept direct deposits, is why I never bought from them too.

They are hard to deal with....Call up, make an order, they sent a contract, you have sign it and email it back within 1hr. I don't have a scanner so it means going to post office and using the fax. Then making payment and on top of that massive waiting times!

I have just registered for their online orders which cuts out most of the process. The problem is that because they have no stock with bars when I went to make an order it said to phone them to make a back order! Crazyness!!! Only a govt backed business could operate like this :)

My last order for the Perth Mint (last week) I paid via direct deposit, and the order before that? Unless the changed the policy in the past few days??

All of mine I have payed by the same method.

When they brought online their bullion store (last year), a credit card was required to register yourself on the form and to purchase. If no credit card, no ability to register to make purchase.

I don't use credit cards so I was excluded from registering this way.

Before this I was told direct deposits were possible.

Seems from all the feedback that a lot of people are not happy with the way The Perth Mint does business.

Could the complicated procedures to buy bullion be a legacy from that great gold robbery of 1982 - The Perth Mint Swindle? What an incredible story and it has never been solved.

Something like that could only happen in WA!

How are cheques a relic of the past? Someone pulled virtually the same scam about 4 months ago.

Big A.D I've written like 2 cheques my entire life and the last one was 5 years+ ago so they're a relic of the past for me ;)

Maybe not relics of the past for the general populace I guess.

Reminds me of that movie with that dude pulling off good scams by social engineering and it had something to do with Pan Am..hmmm.

Heh, same here. I can't remember the last time I wrote out a cheque but they're still used at lot in some backwards countries (*ahem* the U.S.)

The UK is officially going to phase them out in 2018.
