Perth Mint Lunars - coloured or not?

Hey All,

I'm looking at collecting some Perth Mint Lunar coins, as the previous years all seem to hold their value at worst, and increase in most cases.

I was just wondering - the currently available 1oz Silver coins (Horse and Snake) seem to be basically the same price for the normal and coloured variations. It seems like the coloured would be better for future re-sale, or am I missing something?

Really hard to speculate on future demand knowing how fickel this investment is, factors

1. Spot Silver
2. Silver Perth Mint Lunar Demand
3. People wanting coloured variants of Silver Perth Mint Lunar

I think the more specific the lesser potential market when the time comes to sell.. demand dosent always equate to price but does mean finding a buyer at X.XX price level may be more difficult.

As always, do your own research but id say dont touch coloured lunar or coloured any coins, more expensive and many consider it a downgrade from nothing.

The Chinese like coloured coins.

Having said that...the 2oz Coloured Dragon is doing well.

Why muddy good silver with colour? Most people I know buy the silver for its own intrinsic colour (and value) and not some fancy paint job.

Just my two bobs worth.
 
So the main problems are the higher premium and harder to sell?

Well the premium isn't an issue at the moment (unless I'm reading the prices wrong):
1 oz silver coin - 2013 Perth Mint Lunar Snake $39.27
1 oz silver coin - Perth Mint 2013 coloured Lunar Snake $35.69

1 oz silver coin - 2014 Perth Mint Lunar Horse $41.27
1 oz silver coin - 2014 Coloured Lunar Horse - Perth Mint $40.19

Maybe I should just get one of each?...
 
In my assessment, based on a look at a number of sites where large numbers of Perth Lunars are sold, it depends on the size and the year issued. Some years, the color bullion coins are fetching more than the regular bullion coins of the same size and year. Other years, the colors of certain sizes aren't doing as well as their non-color counterparts.

It's really not set in stone either way in spite of the fact that you have some vocal members here who are hell bent against owning any color coins.

That brings up another question I was wondering about - the size. I thought 1oz was basically the standard, but I see a lot of people with 1/2oz or 2oz coins. Am I right in thinking the 1oz would be the easiest to buy/sell?
 
Thanks for those numbers Credit Crunch.

I had a look in person, and decided on the uncoloured coins (based purely on aesthetics). On the internet they look so good, but in person the metal just has a quality that the colour can't match.
