I was at my favourite pawnbroker yesterday ,he had a visit from a production company wanting to do a show in a pawnbroker shop
He told them to get stuffed ;)
After the AGE doing an article on him 20 years ago & twisting the story
So watch out :/

No shyt SM.
I agree, media twist story around to suit their desires.
Nonetheless, I have seen a few of their shows on some vague pr0n site, one episode turned into another before I realized I was watching television. I can see the entertainment in it.

Personally though, better to have bad publicity then no publicity, unless it is some kind of witch hunt (such as pedophilia et cetera). I would still go ahead with media publicity.

I look forward to any logical disagreements by the SS community regarding the above statement.
.

Yes in a marketing sense
Any publicity is better than no publicity
But I don't like it & I don't work that way ;)
I've spent enough time working in the entrainment industry to know how it works ;)

So who's going to be the dumbass to stick his hand up for the gig
If they asked the other pawn shops in the same strip ,I know who would have agreed to it ,I'll ask him tomorrow ;)

Advertisement marketing on television, radio, magazines is worth the kissing a$$ and 'forgiving' the previous bad experience, even if with same media.

Funny enough, do it a few times then you are suddenly promoted as an expert in the field. Public takes notice of this. Most dumbasses are persuaded to consider you an expert if done a few times. One only needs to look at the many apparent Economist receiving such esteem.

Some of these shows are ok i like em....some not so. Dont own a pawn shop but id love to be one of the "Australian Pickers"....if it was legit.Be a great job, like treasure hunting every day.

"Pawn Stars" is pretty good, they try to fill in the show with "comedy"...(stirring the old man etc and good ol Chumlee the shop "idiot")they get some really interesting items.

"American Pickers" is ok,even though IMO most of these shows i reckon are "set up". Seems shows are spinning off other shows and all have the same production company.I do like to see the old antique stuff they show though.

"Auction Hunters" shits me to tears. Some interesting stuff on there but the presenters are only acting and its obviously set up.Funny how these guys are the only ones winning the bidding most of the time.Funny how 99% of the time these 2 clowns are making a KILLING.

"Auction Kings" looks a little more fair dinkum as they have a room full of people bidding on stuff. Some great old cars and antiques/rarities.

"Cajun Pawn Stars" is another spin off. Like a "Redneck Pickers" A lot of guns on this show....theyve got a character(probably another actor) called "Joker" who drops in trying to flog unusual stuff all the time....(another time filler)

As far as a Pawn Shop in Melbourne im sure theyll find someone wholl do it.

If that dont work then do a deal with an antique shop, hire a couple of actors (characters), create a weekly script where something funny or dramatic happens to the crew...and youve got yaself a TV show...

Gets me to thinking...what about a "Silver Stackers" TV show?? ...lol

All you have to do is watch a tacky UK show like Bargain Hunt and see the so-called 'experts' in action.

The only antiques expert on the show worth listening to is the bloody presenter, who's more of a cult of personality anyway!

I hope they do it here in Aus - I could've recommended a dodgy antique dealer/pawnbroker too, but it appears he's recently gone out of business - again. Ah well.

seeing some of the dull fare in local pawn shops. i think an Australian or at least west Australian version of these shows would go down the drain fast.

never see anything interesting. just outdated tech and jewelery.

Same in Melbourne , the only decent pawn shop in town is the guy who told them to get stuffed .
He has some very interesting items ,but the really good stuff is not for sale

Like a solid silver egg (Greek in origin ) I saw there a few weeks ago & he wouldn't sell it .
I asked him how much & he said nothing :o
It's not for sale
He has an old Coke esky & that's not for sale

Has anyone seen the new ABC show "Antique Master"
It was on last night in Vic.
I liked it, you get to see how good dealers think they are, some of them know there stuff others don't, plus you get to see a selection of antiques.

Just got a call from a lady claiming to be from Pawn Stars Australia looking to use something I'm selling in the show. Shop is in Bondi and apparently I'll get my asking price NQA. Said no to being personally filmed so they'll get someone else to do the sale.

Follow up email with Leftfieldpictures.com email address makes it look legit so will find out soon enough.

Don't do it
What ever your selling double the price & add a "0"
Make sure you get paid

I met the marketing girls from Aussie Pickers last month at one of the collectors markets. It's all very fashionable now to go picking and show off your stuff. As a consequence these type of shows are insanely popular.

Ha! Would be quite happy with the price I'm asking, especially after the spot drop :/ Would be interesting to watch how it's all done.
Wonder if they would pay me first...
