panda or kangaroo?

Hi guys

I have started to stack silver and really don't know much about what to buy in gold. I just counted my big tin of coins ($2 $1 50c 20c etc ) and it came to $900 so I thought I use this bonus money to expose myself to gold.

What should I buy? A 1/2oz Panda or Kangaroo - or should I just buy what I like the look of?

Cheers

Just swapped out my change yesterday, only got a paltry $712 though. Still 20oz worth :)

I prefer the panda design if it's for the 2013 you're looking at. Somone pointed out the dodgy looking eye on the Roo and have been put off ever since. Ha

Buy Australian, buy Perth 1/10 oz gold Kangaroo and why???

This is why?

as of gold I buy as close to the spot as possible ... issue do not matter

as of silver - premium for me doesn't matter ... only resale value matters

Depends on when you want to sell... and if you want to make a profit - or only want to maintain your purchasing power.

If you are considering holding for the long term (more than 10years):
Find out what the price of a 2000 1/2oz Gold Kangaroo sells for...
then compare what the price of a 2000 1/2oz Gold Panda (Mirrored or Frosted) sells for.

If you are considering selling in the short term (1-3 years):
Find out what the price of a 2010 1/2oz Gold Kangaroo sells for...
then compare what the price of a 2010 1/2oz Gold Panda sells for.

For someone starting out, go for the highest amount of ounces, regardless of form. The .5oz is not that popular and would be my last choice.

That makes me sad. I have heaps of 1/2 ozers. Low premiums like the full ounces, still a decent sized coin to hold, but more liquidity since you aren't needing to drop 1600 bucks for a single coin.

Funny semi-unrelated Panda story: If you bought 2x 1/2oz Gold Pandas from 1983 instead of 1oz you would've made at least 10-20 times more money in 2012. Give or take, rough estimate. Might even be 50x.

For me I would go for either tiny 1/10oz Gold or 1oz (coins). The 5gm/10gm Perth Mint cards feel like they have a premium that's too high for me as a 'bar', would rather buy 1/10oz coins such as Roos or whatever Lunar release it is.

As to whether Roos or Pandas or whatever I'd say if you intend to resell locally & quickly in the future go with the Roos. Pandas are not meant to be sold quickly and let's be honest most dealers would go O_o at a Panda whereas they'd be more than happy to buy a Roo off you (I still love my Pandas though :P).
