Pan American and Sunshine Minting ingots - first appearance of fakes?

G'day all,

Long time reader, first time poster.

A few years back, I used to buy bulk lots of silver bullion ingots (Pan American and Sunshine Minting) and subsidise my holdings by flogging my excess via 'feebay'.

I've still got a good number of the Sunshines on hand and am actually about to consolidate some more holdings as part of a group APMEX order with Maggie.

So here's my question;

I understand that both these bars are being knocked off at the moment courtesy of the highly informative posts of 'oz copper' and others. My bars were acquired in mid 2008, so I'm interested to know if my holdings predate the first known appearances of the knock offs (in other words, I haven't hacked a bar in half as yet and would prefer to avoid doing same until someone tells me fake bars existed before the start of 09). All pass the magnet test and are within weight range.

Any info would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Stewart

If they weigh correct (31.1g), they should be fine - if in doubt, you can post one to me in Melbourne and I will get an XRF test done. I have samples of both counterfeit bars as references I can compare them to.

The fakes for these are all the wrong weight.

We're probably going to see more and more fakes hitting the market from China. Best bet is to know what the various brands look like and feel like. I'm sure many of the fakes aren't the right dimensions, may sound funny, etc.

goldpelican - how much is a XRF machine?
