Kipkay (generally awesome gadget modding site) demonstrates the coolness of it. Only a shtf item if you must have xray vision to see under people's shirts.

solar chargers are something that will take a little more research to work out what's the best bang for buck

for now, here are two I've had my eye on, but need to look into further - a bit pricey for my folding stuff, though prices are coming down and likely to end up much cheaper as solar tech evolves

what you want is one of these to connect to a NiMH battery charger, then you're cooking

although unavailable right now, my hunch is the wallet sized flexible panel foldout USD/AA (does NiMH) charger can be had for well under $100, if bought from the USA

if you want a charger big enough to charge the laptop, then the 28W rollable version looks good, though ?you may need a charge controller

ok, maybe that's getting carried away a bit :P

one item that's good to consider is a dynamo operated short wave radio

there seems a few around, typically with a solar charger as well, usb port and led light

this one looks good, and can act as a battery charger (for its own NiMH batts, which might be used elsewhere I guess), also charges mobile phone with the hand crank

Batteries:

The preferred type are Low Self Discharge (LSD) NiMH (Nickel
metal hydride) - you could say regular NiMH batts are high self discharge, ie they run out in next to no time. That's why you want LSD.

There are several brands, but Eneloop (Sanyo) and Sony Cycle Energy are good (basically the same unit)

When shopping around for a good buy, be aware that there is an older version (I think pre 2009) and a more recent version as per:

K-Bars are bloody great knives, My dad often uses one, though I've got my old faithful homemade knife. Something about making the handle for a good quality blade yourself that just doesn't grow old.

I made mine with old antlers and some beautiful Scottish Oak ringed up... I'll see if I can find a pic somewhere. The blade's are relatively easy to make if you have an old metal file lying around and can build a crude forge... Not difficult without fire bricks...

As a true survivalists item, I'd recommend a couple of Ray Mears' Bushcraft books, sounds corny but its got me out of some bad situations when I've been caught short! :D

Haven't put it to hours of use yet, but decent use of the saw would need gloves if pistol gripped, due to the butt of the knife

Those leatherman charge's and wave's are great because you don't have to open the bloody tool up to use the blades and they have 'spider holes'...which is great for people like me without fingernails! :)

What's that in the little zip-lock bag Matrix?
