Alright now I'll pay out on the Australian motor industry

It's been happening for 20 years now
I worked for a small crash & bash shop in Melbourne S.E bayside
The whole family worked for GMH in the design / engineering , the oldest brother was involved in designing the GTX
When I paid then a visit in 98 ,the youngest brother told me
The family got the boot from GM as did a whole generation of designers/ engineers
They were all replaced with Americans & a whole new era had started
Parts made in China & assembled locally :rolleyes:
It was/is a long process as it didn't happen overnight
More & more people are getting out of the auto industry

Very few avenues are left in the auto industry
Kenworth & Volvo are doing big things in Melbourne
IVECO/ FIAT want be here for much longer , with the management going about the way they are :rolleyes:
Fiat send all their reject management here so they see what gavno looks like :rolleyes:

A sad story!

Back in the olden days (D Type and E Type days) in the bank I had a workmate who inherited 6000 POUNDS from his grandmother.

He took the money down to the Jag dealer in Melbourne and bought one, not sure now what model. Drove it out of the showroom and wrote it off at the first intersection.

Yeah that's why most of the Commodores and Fords from the 1990s are still on the roads and every P plater wants a 1980s VK or VL Commodore. And Falcon taxis run to 500,000km, Statesmans to 800,000km. I love BMWs but if you run one past 200,000 you need your head read, even around 150,000km they are a parts black hole. I know, I used to own one!

Agree, IMHO the Ford and Holden are good cars, value for money. Not fancy like a BMW but will go for 20+++ years in all cases if you service them and look after them. There are PLENTY of 30 and 40 year old Fords on the road.

I was worried there was something wrong with my car in traffic yesterday, a horrible sound just louder than the radio. Turns out it was car next to me, a 1990s-vintage BMW. Sounded like every lifter (it would have been a 6 cylinder) was out of alignment to each other, and they all hit the pistons after lifting them at different tones. Add in the cacophony of the thermo fan at full pelt trying to do the work of the obviously failing radiator...it was a hella noise.

Like I've said before I like BMWs and will own a (newish) one again in future, but for longevity, unless you have given up on life and drive a cardigan, I mean Toyota or Honda Accord, there is no comparision to the Australian made cars.

Customers loved the Monaro and Commodore rebadged as Pontiacs. A shame that when General Motors became Government Motors the entire Pontiac brand had to be cut away. Everyone interested in the market segment of V8s knew the Commodore would do well as a Chevrolet as well.

Another very reliable car is the all aussie Ford 'AU' model......The taxi operators used to get at least 500,000k's out of them and they dont have the differential or transmission problems of the later models.
