hi all , new to buying silver can any one tell me what silver coins to start my stack with and what to stay away from.
thanks

Depends what your objectives are...

If it's liquidity, then bars are often preferred.
But if it's growth (beyond the price of silver), then often collectibles/numismatics do well (e.g. Pandas, etc).

It all depends on your location...

Stay away from eBay silver cladding...!!!

Why not start your stack with silver bars unless you want to collect silver coins which will become expensive, never ending and with too much attachment being made to certain coins so you will never sell them.

If in aus I would stick to silver bullion kooks and koalas only as you can have a bit of fun chasing past year coins without too big a premium.

Personally I am now sticking to silver bars and sort of wish I had taken that advise from a few members when I started out. with coins and rounds there are just way too many to choose from with new designs popping up everywhere and you want to and quite often do buy them all! expensive clutter!

Stick with one or two types of coin or just bars.

Canadian Maples and wildlife series Perth Mint Funnel web spiders and new kangaroos seem prone to milk spotting which re values them at silver spot price so you may as well have bought silver bars.

My favourite is American Silver Eagles.

I am in Mackay North qld

Perth Mint 10 oz silver bars, Perth Mint kookaburra and Koala 1oz silver bullion coins.

Perth Mint gold certicards and Perth Mint 1/10th oz gold kangaroo coins. feel free to purchase 1/4 1/2 and 1oz coins but 1/10ths are pretty easy to sell on. :)

Start with 2016 kooks and koalas as the price will go up slightly as soon as 2017 coins are released.

Buy from a reliable bullion dealer in your area or you can sometimes find better prices from trusted sellers on Silver Stackers in the trade section. :)

I can only endorse what fishtaco says. He said as much to me when I was in a similar position to you and it has stood me well. The sooner you settle on a stategy and stick to it the better. Another thing with the bars was to settle on the one type/size. I also have a very good regular supplier who facilitates my strategy going a long way to increasing my confidence as a stacker.

Being that you live in Qld, I don't think you can go wrong with buying Perth Mint favorites like silver BU (Brilliant Uncirculated or aka bullion) Lunars, Koalas, and Kooks. You can start off with the bullion versions of these and then at some point pick up some proof versions of these coins.

I think Fishtaco is 100% spot on with his advice, but I could add a few other suggestions
1. Many people will warn away from high premium numis, especially coloured coins. Which is probably sound. But if there is a series you really like, what the hell, splurge. You only live once
2. I keep a spreadsheet of all coin/bullion. Otherwise sometime I forget what I've got, and I accidentally double up
3. YEnnus was also correct- it depends on your objectives. For me it's an investment, a store of value, but also some enjoyment along the way collecting. I am partial to kooks,ASEs, fiddies, PM lunars,10oz bars and kooks, and some predecimal silver.
4. There are too many choices out there, so unless you are a millionaire, you need to be selective. Also need to consider SECURITY and space. Many of those Numis issues have bulky packaging
That just my view.

thanks for the advice guys, have settled on 10oz bars and a few coin series like kooks and koalas but I do like wedgetails
