The painted on shadows are a bit like how they use makeup to highlight the abs on actors who don't really have any. Notice how on this inferior moldavite coin, the shadows are painted onto the coin because the coin is just basically normal relief, not anywhere near the high relief and curvature of the Volcano Erta Ale coin.
