Just getting into the Coin scene, instead of just collecting bars, I just had a few questions

1. What were some of the REALLY collectible coins that are selling for WAY over their buy price?

2. What coins in the future do you think will be REALLY collectible and worth alot eg . 2012 opal koala, 2012 opal wombat, 2013 lunar snake ect...

3. What is your favorite coin?
 
1) pandas pre 2009
2) 2012 non 1oz (there's going to be heaps of those around)
3) 10oz kookaburra

I don't think that the 2012 will be any different to 2010 and 2011 Pandas. When you take into consideration that China has over 1.4 billion people and they adore their Pandas same as many people from other countries, 8 million is not very many. Just my thoughts.
 
When Perth Mint was soliciting suggestions last year for new coin themes, I suggested to them the Phoenix, the magical bird of Egypt and China. As it is associated with Fire, it must be made out of gold, metal of the Sun. If they do this, and it is genuinely limited edition (unlike the so-called limited editions of dragons), then IMHO, this will be one of the very best.

Yes I love the idea of a PHOENIX coin...fantastic concept would make a magnificent coin..
 
Depends on the current market.There is always a hype for something/2012 dragon/until something new comes along-opal koala.And then a new year comes with new coins and new buyers on the market.I personally like the Deadly series but never ever would buy the redback for $1000:) That is just silly:) I think the opal series offers something unique with the light inside,makes it worth to display it:))
 
I personally think the Nofed Liberty Dollars are a sleeping giant in the numismatic world as they are no longer minted.

When the U.S Dollar becomes totally worthless I think people will realise the importance that these rounds had on the movement for people to go back to real money.

2007 and 2008 Carded Kangaroo
2007 and 2008 Carded Koala (even un-carded appear to carry a premium)
1983 Englehard american Prospector round
2010 NZ taku bullion (first year issued)
2008 Lakota Crazy Horse (first year issued)

Pretty much all perth mint lunar series bullion and proof

Carded New Zealand 1oz kiwi...all years

although the perth mint have ruined the 1oz bullion kookaburra series (my opinion)...proof kooks still appear to be bringing in good premiums

These are just some 1oz coins that I've seen fetch a nice premium on ebay.......along with the other coins that have already been listed

1. Lunars gold and silver BU
2. Kooks all sizes
3. Pandas gold silver and graded
4. 1966 50cent

Whoever came up with that should be dragged out back and shot.

The concept is horrible, the design is even worse IMHO.

To the OP : don't get caught up in collectable premium hype. I know when spot isn't doing anything exciting people turn to numismatics, but at the end of the day silver is silver is silver.

I have a number of 1oz tigers which have appreciated as numi's go, but I don't chase anything else with a limited run or colours on it other than the base metal.

To each, their own (naturally), but I prefer to base my stack on simple ounces and wait.
 
Posters telling you aboutthe early pandas and 07, 08 kangaroos ... these are examples of buying something that started off with a low premium that turned into a decent premium...

What you SHOULDNT do now is buy there... as they alreafy have mad premiums.

Buy Bullion close to spot and try and make it coins that will emulate the above.

Dont buy Perth Mint non bullion PERIOD>. this is proberbly worse than buying diet coke and keeping your money in fiat.. i certianly think saving your money is better than buying modern perth mint products..

I also wouldnt bother with 1966 50c coin, they stand little chance of apprreciating over spot.. these are and will always be good SHTF currency but other than that they are rubbish..

Buy OLD SILVER so its antique, numismatic, has a high % silver and also very historial and maybe rare. OR but bullion\

And if you have to waste money on modern numiis stuff.. do it cos you like it as a collector.. i doubt they are investments as bullion usually catches up and passes the $109 perth mint type stuff!

The Deadly & Dangerous series is pretty popular. Some of the earlier releases have increased a lot, namely the Red Back Spider, which I heard was going for around $2k!
 
Anyone considered antique pre-decimal typesets?

Not quite the standard bullion or numi's market, but I've seen complete monarch typesets in pretty poor grading sell for WAY over spot.

One example I saw included:

3d
6d
Shilling
Florin
Half Crown
Crown
Half Sov
Full Sov

This was a 1880s British Victorian typeset, which you could make up with a bit of selective buying here and there - this went for around 2500 GBP.

Needless to say, I've been buying victorian and George III pre decimal coinage since... :D



Oh and my fave (silver) coin - Spanish 8 Reales! Proper old school piece of eight!
 
i tend to invest in bullion and collect some coins i like and think will appreciate.

Pandas come to mind for my numi speculation and ASE/Maples/Engelhard come to mind for the stacking side of my buying.

get whatever you like but don't get caught up in the hype of any colored coin i think those will fade out and at some point be looked at simular to colored ase's...well maybe not that bad but you get the point.

also i have really started to like Morgan dollars for a numi fix here and there if panda prices on the bay are to high...its a piece of history with a decent bit of silver
