I doubt Banco de Mexico is required to give permission to any dealer who puts together a set. There would be a legal problem I'd bet if the dealer claimed it was an official mint set.

Personally, I think in the end it serves the Libertad collector better that these un-official sets are put together....just so long as the dealer is not claiming the after market set to be something it is not (which would be an official mint set).

Well, the impression was a mint set, even if not absolutely expressed as such. I wasn't aware that it wasn't.

Libertadiac said in post #110 that there was no certificate, but his picture there does show the box having "Banco de Mexico" on it.

wow i like the 1979 coin...
Me too !!

History behind that coin is:

in 1978,79,80 they minted those 1 oz silver coins to use as money, the peso was taking a nose dive
Each day, the purchasing power was based on what the spot price of silver was
These coins were minted and used as the "official" currency of the day
needless to say, it became a disaster, as some merchants, or the public would see fluctuations from one day to the next in spot
Hence 1981 had no silver coin while they re-vamped their thinking
took them until 1994 to devalue the peso

although Jos Lpez Portillo, President When Mexico's Default Set Off Debt Crisis, and disgraced him.
The one thing he did give Mexico and the world is the new Libertads we now enjoy.

Yes, it does look as if the people who produce that un-official set want potential buyers to believe it might be an official set. Every day I learn something new about coins.

same as there are a few sets out there with the COA but, the number is written in and not printed by the mint
There is a guy selling "error" sets, or as he claims that the mint shipped and forgot to print the numbers on the COA's

Me thinks an inside job happened

Agree db, "collection" would be the appropriate term. Also, there's no mention on the APMEX listing which clarifies the fact that this is not an official set.
