So I recently traveled to Mexico for my honeymoon. I was staying just outside of Playa Del Carmon, its a very big tourist area. Anyways, I was keeping an eye out for some Libertads, about 5 days in, on a tour to swim with the sea turtles, there was a silver shop. I noticed in the back, on the bottom shelf there was some 1oz libertad coins. so I called the owner over and asked him to get one out and have a look.
It looked and sounded silver, so I asked him how much. He said 3000pesos. I laughed at him and asked him how much in USD. He said $270, I laughed at him again and said too much. The owner asked me to give him a price, and I said $27US, and that was being generous. He got angry at me, so I left the store.
A few days later we were in town looking through all the tourist stores, and there was one silver store that didn't have anyone sitting out front trying to call us in, so what do we do, pick that one to go in and look. The owner of this store was very helpful, i asked him about the Libertads, he didn't have any, but he got on the internet and showed me where to buy them, gave me an address. We bought some small jewellery items from him. He even gave us 33% straight away on a non-negotiable price.
So we walk to the store where I was expecting to pick up the Libertads, and its a bloody bank, inside a harvey norman type store. They sell them over the counter for at the time 295pesos. As I didnt have any pesos, and they ddnt accept USD at the bank, I had to go exchange. So I ended up pick up Libertads at the Mexican bank for 24USD over the counter in their own personalized capsule with BANCO AZTECA across the face of it..
All in all, it was a good experience.
