maple's, philharmonic's, armenian noah's ark , and atkinsons

So tomorrow i'll be Making a buy of ten coins and i was wondering about peoples opinions on these coins..They are all about the same price.

I am interested with the maples for the 9999 purity, and currently have 7 bisons from the wildlife series..The Armenian's noah's ark look really nice coins, and i heard the philharmonics have a great finish.

If you have any of these coins how would you rate the finish? I understand these are bullion coins but i am interested if one is better than the others in general. any ideas on mintage numbers?

Also with atkinsons i notice some coins say prices in 10+ and some don't, im just wondering if the 10+ cannot be bought individually? I am half tempted to go for a selection of many coins.

Thanks for any help:)

Hmm. Would suggest you go for low premiums now.

But if they're all equal in prices, I say the Armenian coins have a really nice shine to it. Not really a fan of philharmonics but it's a matter of personal preference.

Any reason you didn't consider the 2013 Britannias? I thought atkinsons had a special on those. And assuming they're all in good condition, they would be a good buy since it's the first 99.9 coin the series.

They are all literally a few pence per ounce in difference, the maple is 12p more per coin than the cheapest of the three.

I did consider the Britannia's, but they work out 10% more per ounce and i have heard lots of problems with the finish, and seen many on youtube covered in scratches. That really puts me off them.

The Armenian coins do look really good!:) just wondering what plastic cases they would fit in.

Hmm. You have a point but it would be quite worth the effort if you could get those without scratches!

The 2013 Brits and Armenian coins should fit in 39mm capsules.

I actually like looking at the maples. Many do not as they are a generic coin and can be prone to milk spots. I like the simplicity of the leaf.
I like the detail in the philly's but don't like the plain edge.

I haven't seen the others and can't say i would go out and buy bulk of any of these.
At these prices i think it is best to buy on price and maximise your bang for buck. Possibly suggest bars unless you specifically want the coins.

Depends on how about the same price "about the same price" actually is... 2% spread? 20% spread? Maples are famous for transit damage and milk spots, which are almost obligatory with them. Phils are pretty and are rarely transit-damaged but do come up with milk spots, though not as much as Maples. If the Noah's Arks or Britannias are close enough to the same price, I'd go with them. If the Maples and Phils are significantly less costly and not damaged or spotted, I'd go with them. Happy shopping!

Definitely Vienna Philharmonics. Why? Simply because is the cheapest 1 oz bullion coin I can get in Poland. Additionally no milk spots at all, no scratches, etc.

you need to look at wider reasons too

phils are cheap and cheerful but will resell as just bullion

maples get milk spots which rcm doesn't much care about correcting so you could open up your tubes in 5 years time and the coins are covered with spots

noah's are nice coins but probably no numis value unless you go for the large 10 oz with low mintage

Armenians are a nice coin with a satin finish

The wildlife series will probably hold more value but again be aware of milk spots

Britannia's while been a bit more expensive.. they are legal tender and have no capital gains when you sell.. could be worth it for someone with a big stack to move quickly

Britannias any day of the week and if they're scratched return them until you get unscratched ones. Mine are fine. But out of a lot of fairly mundane coins I'd go for the Noah's Ark merely because they are a bit scarcer in the UK and the reverse side is interesting. The Philharmonics to me are like Euro Banknotes - I think somebody went out of their way and through a rigarous process decided by committee to remove anything remotely arresting or laudable about the design. Coins that don't change every year don't have to be dull - the Libertad design is a great example. But why not collect something with Numismatic as well as intrinsic value?

Re your question about bulk buys of 10. They have to be the same coins as far as I know. I once did a deal with a mint where I bought over 100 in one go of 2 different Canadian Wildlife coins and they gave me the bulk price as if it was one design but that was in person. Give it a go though, they can only tell you to sod off.

Personally I'd buy a couple of each :)

As has been stated many a time though it depends what you want them for. For me personally I'm not in silver to make a buck but as a way to stop me spending money on other things - ie beer and scotch! Having a few of everything instead of lots of one coin type also takes away the temptation to sell when you need some cash - makes one think "do I *really* need xyz" because it becomes a collection.

Cheers

So based on my reading every mentioned series here, as well as some PM coins, can get milk spots? :/ :/

Did you decide ?
What have you received and how do they compare ?
I was pretty active in this forum as an early buyer of bad Britannias 2013 and posted pictures etc.
Having bought circa 100 more recently, they seem fine so while silver is relatively cheap you might want to get some Brits. I cannot buy a 2005 Brit on eBay for less than twice spot. Would like to be able to say similar about the 2013 in 2020.

I decided to go a completely different route in the end and bought some local scrap silver coins, they sure dont look as pretty but i was able to get 14 ounces instead of 10 for the same money. I have been stacking since December last year but my funds are extremely low and so my stack was only 66 ounces but its now up to 80..Will feel good to get to the first milestone of 100! I really really wanted some fine bullion coins but decided that in my situation i need to get as much weight for the lowest price to get my DCA down.

I will certainly be referring back to this topic in the future though:) Thanks for all the advice.

I'm not sure about you guys in Europe, but here, premiums are essentially $3 over spot for all 3 of those coins, however the Noah's Ark coin is easy to sell at say $10 over spot on feebay, which makes no sense to me.

Im in the UK so have the awful 20% VAT on silver, then dealers premiums and postage so at the lowest silver has recently been i could have bought 10 x 1 ounce coins at 17.50 each..but when spot is 12.50 thats just too rich for me, and its never going to get any better.

gold of is VAT free so a much better option here but with the GSR in silvers favor i want silver, and i do believe silver has a better long term potential due to its many many uses. Plus its easier for me to buy in smaller amounts. Very tempting to get a gold sov at these prices though i must admit!

Wouldn't it be more advantageous for you to purchase from outside of Europe in that case?

Can I make some serious dough if I bring say a monster box of Maples by flight to Europe? Instant 21% increase due to VAT? Pays for my vacation?

As far as i know all bullion coins still have to pay 20% on entering the uk. But people do chance it and some slip through the net. I believe in germany VAT is 7% and some travel there for large orders, once the VAT is paid in germany it does not have to be paid here. But they are finishing that soon its going upto 19%!.

I must stress though this is just what i think is the case and have never done anything like it. My buys are often really small.

They are all basically the same.. Legal tender one ounce bullion, take your pick.. After a while I'd say you will come to realise its all much of a muchness.. Hence the same price .. I'd go for the lowest costing one.. Except maybe not maples or phillies as they milk which can make them harder to sell on later..

1for1

From a design and look perspective, I would say go for Armenia's Noah's ark. I personally own the 1oz and the 5oz in my collection.

Disclaimer: I'm Armenian :)

Nothing wrong with junk silver coins, I have some English half crowns and shillings in my collection along with about 20kg of Australian junk coins. Most bought for less than spot.
