Although most of my commentary here was written before I got around to reading tamo42's commentary, notice that we're both saying pretty much the same things. The cheap coins are where the excitement is at the moment, because people are so willing to part with them, they're going for proportionally cheaper prices than the "big heavies" that cost thousands of dollars. I think they're better investments, because their upside bounce will be proportionally greater too. In other words, I can make 20% on a multi-kilobuck coin, or I can make 200% on coin that costs me under $500. The choice is easy.

One more quick mention: The number of images uploaded to the Chinese Coin Forum has exceeded 10,000 recently!

The lower end of the market continues to heat up while the top end of the market is seeing less buying pressure. What I found most interesting was the 1989 silver New York expos that sold right away. The seller put one up, it sold immediately. Then the seller put another up, and it sold immediately. To be sure, they were offers $50-$75 below the full asking price, but clearly the seller had set up his auto-accept levels within those parameters. Perhaps coincidentally, the 1989 silver Chinese historicals 4 coin set was a *major* deal for whoever bought it. Congrats!

Oh, another thing. I've started posting updates on twitter as just another way to get the word out when new coins become available. If you're a tweeter, follow me @tamo42 to get the latest.

I bought that 1989 expo panda tamo mentions lol... it actually sold twice at $550 I believe, me and another guy bought one each!

The reason I bought it was because tamo/Austacker made it sound so enticing and it's price level was screaming "bargain" to me.

Also the flood of them on the market is from mostly one seller, I believe once they're cleaned out they will be back to the usual scarce levels.

I actually offered $515 before but he countered with a $550, I couldn't be bothered stuffing around for an odd $20-30 so took his offer.

Was a good price ($588 US shipped), especially with the strong AUD (~1.06 at time of purchase).

Read more here.

He also mentions the 1998LD 1oz BU Panda. Something I know fishball has mentioned a few times as very undervalued. There is a pretty hot auction for a MS69 on eBay at the moment that looks to eclipse the previous top sale price.

Are you talking about this?

I am watching that auction, anything under $450 feels like a good buy to me so might put in a last minute sneaky bid.

As for me mentioning it being undervalued, I wish I could claim credit for that but it was 25Grizzlies who first alerted me to it back when we first met in Sydney.

Hey fish,

I was the $525 guy! :D Exhange rate could have been better though. to $ = fail .. well compared to the 1 = $2 days lol

The reason i bought it was because i love the design and like you i believe there is defo upside potential.

Chances are the other guy who bought for $550 is on here as well. Lots of astute buyers on here!

My reasoning for the upside potential is:

Low mintage
Great design
Currently market flooded thus reflecting low prices (ie. Good buy)

Although I bought it mostly for the second reason, the design is awesome.

Well, thanks to you both, I investigated them shortly after you mentioned them and picked up an OMP sheet. Hopefully we all make a solid return. It is interesting how word travels and generates hype.

FB you're right
I was the "other guy" :P ,
after reading so many positive review about this coin, I decided to buy one too
I offered $525 but the seller counter offered for $550, and it was sold before I accepted it,
Bought it for $550 when the seller relisted the item.

nothing can go wrong with $550, 4000 mintage Panda!
will post pic hopefully next week ;)

And the Pandamonium is likely to get much hotter in the coming days, months and years... I'm going to want a much bigger budget for these Pandas.
