Kooks Vs Koalas

Hi Stackers

I just wanted some opinions on kooks Vs Koalas.

I have been stacking 1oz kooks for a while now and they are really all Ive got.... and its starting to get a bit boring.... my eyes are wondering towards Koalas, phila's, ASE's and Maples....

In the interest of resale I have stuck with the kooks cause they are the most recognised (?) ozzie coin. If I start stacking Koalas, are these going to be harder to move longer term (and I am talking about moving in public - not on this forum)?

Does anyone have a priority list of the mainstream 1oz coins?

I am thinking mine would be:

1 kooks
2 koalas
3 Maples (cause of the purity)
4 ASE's
5 Phila's

Noticably missing are the lunars.... I just cant bring myself to like these....

Also worth mentioning that I am interested in the 1/2 oz koalas as well - I know that the premiums are really high on these but they ARE cheaper and I can buy these when I dont have any stack money left!!! ....any opinions on these?

Any comments appreciated.

Lunars are the one coin missing from that list that has genuine numismatic potential - everything else is really just bullion.

(Shock horror)... Personally I don't stack Kookaburras. That said, since 2010, the Perth Mint has brought the Koalas up to the same design and minting standard as Kookaburras, so in time they will be just as well recognised, but I don't believe there's any mintage limits on Koalas, whereas Kookaburras used to be capped at 300,000 per year (now increased to 500,000 per year I believe).

In my opinion, if you're going to stack Perth Mint coins, stack Lunars. Look into the prices for previous years - whereas almost every previous year Kookaburra is available for pretty much the same price as a current year Kookaburra. The bullion Kook just doesn't gain numismatic value (yet).

My personal favourite on the list is the ASE. Not a fan of the Maples and Philharmonics, but all coins have their fans.
 
i think whoever is designing the Koalas should get the sack as they look dreadful. They cant seem to design a nice cute Koala, instead they look like they will attack you. China have done a good job with the new panda design, maybe we should get china to design them.

on the other hand they have done some very nice kookaburra designs.

do you not like series 1 or 2 or both lunars? I think series 2 was a let down.

My favs are ASE, Maples & Kooks.
 
2010 Koala Design is very plain and dry. Disappointed. However, i think they have sack that guy already. 2011 Koala is very impressive, i got around 22 of those and i still want more. For Kook i think the design since 2008 looks pretty good . I love all designs 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. However, 2009 is my favorite so far, it is exceptional. Trust me.

So my order is a little different:
1 Lunar (limited of 300,000) has numismatic potential and mainly demanded by the asian market
2 Kooks (sometimes limited to 300,000 or unlimited) price is same no matter what year you have
3 Koalas (unlimited mintage)
4 PAMPS

later I might collect these as well
5 Maples (cause of the purity)
6 ASE's
7 Phila's
 
ase's hands down as my preferred bullion coin.
not a fan of lunars way too fluffy for me + premiums on the things hurt your dca.

I agree that the earlier koalas are horrible but the 2011 is better - even though they do look a little dangerous!!!

The pandas are fantastic looking coins.

I own a small amount of the lunars and I think they are horribly busy. I agree that I need to "get over it" before stackers start to post this, particularly if they have a greater numismatic value but I really enjoy stacking / collecting coins that I like - Its hard for me to buy a few rolls of a design I dont like even if it is purly for preservation of wealth.

Hey GP - why dont you stack kooks? Is it just because you want to put the fiat into ASE's???

I like all Silver coins provided that are Marked with 99.9 1oz pure Silver somewhere on them, I collect for the ounces, not for any aesthetic value. Buffalo rounds are an example, if they are cheaper than ASE i will buy them. Always nice to have variety.

I think the Gold Privy Kooks are a winner, esp. the panda & the dragon. They are still amazingly cheap in regard to their low mintage.

Chinese coins, Pandas, Astrologicals, Unicorns. (Millenniums)

The sun sinks in the West as it rises in the East !
 
People like the 2011 koala might also consider this little monster

When i first saw the 2-010 design, i had to do a doubletake!
Looked to me like one koala doing something with another,,,, real silver porn. :cool:

I said the same thing as well. One has a rather surprised look on their face :)
 
I like the lunars.

I think series I is so so. Series II to my eyes is much better. The older series with its pointillated circumference is really a confused design reminiscent of predecimal coinage. The designs are very tailored towards the Asian market, whereas the series II are a lot more universal and their border is unique.

I like the designs so far.
 
Most Commonwealth countries use the official Ian Rank Broadley etc designs.

That Cook Islands one is very unique. They must have used a local artist. She definitely has a Polynesian look to her in that profile.

Reminds me of the varied representations of Jesus in imagery. The iconography is flavoured by the local demands.

1. Also very popular here in EU :P
2. Boring and not very pretty, expect last few years. :|
3. Unlimited mintage, people always say they are ugly, they don't buy them, but when the (low) mintage numbers come out then everybody wants them regardless of price. :rolleyes:

At least that is what I think. :cool:
 
I go for bang for buck, at the end of the day when it all goes ballistic any high grade silver will be in demand, those caught in the frenzy won't be choosey!
