Koala 2014

"Mike Guilfoyle" is the credited 'designer'

I'm surprised to hear this. Mike Guilfoyle has designed a number of Irish silver coins, all of which i generally liked.
But....
the Abominable Koala is not his finest hour

Makes you wonder what the alternate designs were like!

I wager this is one of those designs that would have been done in colour initially and it hasn't translated well as a coin.

I played around with filling the eyes and nose in black, little pink on the lip and around the eyes and it looks a lot better.
Chin up mike, I can appreciate what your vision was.

lipstick...pig :|

You know, I'd be one of the first to say I'm a big fan of Perth Mint stuff - I think they do a pretty darn good job on most things they produce (blob-bars could be better, but then, you're simply buying a hunk of whatever metal with whatever purity at whatever weight - Old Ted will tell you, the shape don't really matter).

That said, and with every morsel of respect for the designer(s) on the 2014 Koala... it will be one I shall pass on, thanks very much.

Kid's nightmares have been started from less scary things! ;)

From what I've seen in the design studio when visiting the mint in a business capacity, yes, designs start out as colour artwork, and are then translated into a rendering for die production.

The 2011 koala looked fantastic as a colour artwork, but the designer was mortified by the feedback that they looked like they were humping on the coin.

Can't see why anyone will buy a roll of 1oz koalas when they will be able to get a roll of 2oz horses for just about the same premium

Both will be unlimited mintage

:D I saw on several pages that mintage of 1 oz is supposedly limited to 300 000 as it was with previous Lunars. :)
