I have been to the two Brisbane Stackers meetings and never felt at in any danger, nor did I have to to pack up my silver everytime I went to the toilet or to get a drink. I am coming along to the next one and I am looking forward to it. I will be bringing a few show and tell items and possibly some trades. I will not be coming armed as my hands and feets are deadly weapons.

I know you can't be too lax in letting people in nor overly picky, my "'one trade and you get an invite with date/time of meeting" comment arose because at my first meeting I only had one trade under my belt and it wasn't with you. I had written in the EOI thread and I did have a few posts so it wasn't as if I walked in off the street. (though I did walk in off the street)

The venues have all been secluded so the general public haven't been able to come along and browse or sticky beak but if they wanted to their isn't much to stop them. I am sure some of the members are more than able to protect themselves and their stash and I personally have no problem with bringing along gold and silver to the meets.

However it would be naive to think that there was not enough around the table to make it worthwhile trying to lift, either subtly by swiping a few rounds or by waving something around and threatening people. I don't think it is paranoid or a sheeple's over reaction to the Main Stream Media's coverage of muggings, not everything is as manipulated as the price of silver you know.

Maybe I watch too many TV shows.

Once again no offence meant RD, they are well organised events, the only thing fuming at the next meeting should be the dragons!

This thread has got me thinking. I organized the last Adelaide meet up, at which time we had a new person turn up. As has always been the case it was a pleasant night, but in future, for any events that I organize, I'll take the time to f2f any potential new people before hand. As a rule there isn't much swapping, sometimes none, but you can't be too careful. Cheers.

That was me. I waited 10 minutes outside and after a while Pub door security came up to me looking a bit worried.

They asked me if I was an undercover cop or something to that effect.

I know nothing about these meets and being that I am on the other side of the world I'll probably never attend one but I'd like to. That said I don't think it is paranoid and irrational to think someone might try or succeed in stealing something at one of these meets. This coming from someone who's been ripped off before, violently and non violently. That sort of stuff happens all the time and too suggest that its the media manipulating to scare people is ridiculous, the price of metal has increased and as a result it has become more profitable for criminals to steal.
But if someone's gonna rob you its not gonna be at the meet it'd be on your way out, but then again the same thing could happen outside an atm. My point being is even though its a low possibility its still a possibility and if a person is uncomfortable with something I don't see the point in ridiculing them for their opinion.
And Vektor the condescending tone of your posts is uninspiring I'd like to see how hard you roll when four guys with knives and bear spray want to relieve you of your stash. Tough talk is really easy on a key board.

Vektor is not the sort of person I would try to mug but then I am not criminaly inclined, having said that I wouldn't mind trying some bear spray out on someone, it sounds like it should be pretty interesting, pretty specific, but interesting.

It burns, a friend of mine was at a night club a fight broke out and someone in the rumble bear sprayed the club as they ran out of there and took down a few dozen people. Its a pretty effective way to clear a room. And it burns for hours even if it gets on your skin, nasty stuff I carry it whenever I go hiking in the woods. That and a couple of knives.

Bear spray is a restricted item, not common down here.. probably more likely to face a cheapo stun gun...And 4 guys?? So 4 guys are gunna bother the risk of jail or worse for grabbing a few ozes of silver?? On camera? You guys are not living in the reality of Brisbane. I have REAL SECURITY EXPERIENCE IN BRISBANE..I know about 50 security guards, 20 QLD coppers and they would all think this talk is rubbish.. I'm condescending because this talk is crap...Comes from people with no experience, except, like yourself, of being victims..

Our small time crims DONT carry guns. Only the drug dealers.. And knives? Dealt with em before, probbaly about 5 times. Got a nice super-glued shut stanley knife scar on my right forearm. This idea that we are only 'safe' when we are under armed guard is ludicrous. As I said, grow some balls.....Brisbane is mild. If it wasnt, I would be the first to admit it.

Paranoia is NOT part of clear, prepared thinking.

These meets are safe. If people are that worried I can organise licenced security, but they start at $45 an hour, unarmed.

Everyday, every night, little Chinese men walk out of the casino with bulging wallets full of cash.. After flashing it around at the tables.. I dont remember A SINGLE ONE of our regulars when I worked there, getting rolled.. End of fantasy crime stoppers discussion.

Well the fact that you have a nice superglued stanley knife wound would certainly point to it being more than just paranoia! I don't want to face a cheapo stun gun either for that matter.

Granted you know more about Brisbane than I do and if you think it is safe then I am sure you will take the precautions you feel appropriate. I know last time I brought down a couple of thousands worth of show and tell which as now everyone has seen I probably won't bring down again, for no other reason than it is heavy!

Granted, irrational fears do not belong in prepared thinking but rational fears do have a place, call them concerns rather than fears.

And I don't think I am giving the game away by saying there was more than a few ounces on the table at the meeting, It was great to see some of the Kilo Lunars and some of the 10oz's along with the gold coins, there was even some platinum but it was tiny!

the few crims I have a passing acquaintance of an acquaintance with are not the brightest sparks on the planet and I doubt it would even cross their mind about going to prison if they thought about helping themselves. They wouldn't plan to rob you but if they came in for a drink and saw gold and silver on the table I can assure you they would be on the phones to their mates in no time! Most of us would be safe but Pikey would be stripped of his belt buckles, sov rings and chunky neckalces within minutes!

Anyway, it doesn't look like we are going to come to an agreement over whether we are being over or under cautious but my biggest fear at the last meeting was that I would get killed trying to get into the parking lot.

I'd go to a meet if I lived in the area I'm just saying that I could understand why some may not it has nothing to do with experience in being a victim. There's nothing weak or wrong about being cautious about your investments but as said already you don't have to go if you're not comfortable.

RD why you turn down 10-15 members? thats not doing yourself any favours the more the merrier with more to trade sell swap .Unless its at your house than i understand .Why not have it somewhere where everyone is welcome .

I do take precautions.. the last meeting, I took a few walks around, see if there was any carloads in the carpark, checked exits, if anyone who wasnt in the 'private function' rocked up, I would have cheerfully and politely told them. I am constantly aware of any potential threats. That's why I'm not worried about going to an F'n swap meet at a pub..

Seriously, posting on the net and arranging to meet strangers is a FAR GREATER SECURITY RISK as far as this sort of thing goes..

If you are goin to think about security, the first thing you need is an accurate assessment of the risks.. And in this case, I assessed the risks to be lower than using an ATM in many suburbs..

And bringing more than you intend to swap is not the idea. A little show and tell is great, but dragging stacks around the countryside is not wise.

There is no security in being paranoid all the time. It causes mental fatigue and mistakes. A handy tool is the Cooper Color codes, if you actually want to be able to think when needed. Instead of being afraid, people should educate themselves. No amount of fear will save you if something terrible happens.

Actually, we were watchinh you on our hidden cameras....something we do to see if you pass " the test" you did. next time we'll actually show up, and hopefully you will be there { with the required 1oz of Ag per person!}

Its in the pockets of my clothes. I live in the south so there's a high chance many of us are armed.

Also I don't wear jewelry certain parts in FL in the bad parts people do snatch and grabs regularly.

One time I rode a public bus from my moms fancy house in GA back to my dads house in FL and the bus stop had a lot of crack heads and one girl stuck her hand in my pocket and tried to take anything I had.

I think she took a couple of dollars and I couldn't do anything. One guy also wanted me to break some change for him in an alley no one was in.

I wasn't falling for that one though. I could have kicked that girls butt as she was skinny like pasta but her guy friends would have ganged up on me if I tried. The funny thing is police was right there watching but don't do anything if its small peas.

I was naive at the time though now Id be swinging and already have dental plans ready.

The old CN/CS was far better than OC. Burned skin, could spray on legs for a lesser 'fuming' effect. But they stopped using it as it was carcinogenic. They used to sell it in the 80s as 'personal fire extinguisher' Till customs and the police caught on.
