They don't sell jewels or metals, they sell a lifestyle aspiration or attempt to guilt trip you into spending out of "love". Yes, spend $4999 (some poor sod probably did pay that) for a couple of hundred dollars of metal and a few quid worth of stamping it out into necklace form in a factory.
even if you buy at $1500 a jeweller will never pay you anywhere near for it. Because they SELL "expressions of love" - but what they BUY is metal - usually at spot or less from people who are desperate.
They disgust me
This is why I like the way gold/jewellery stores work in asia. All the jewlellery is marked as being a % over spot, depending on the work that has gone into it. Unlike westerners, they havent lost touch of the true value in the piece of jewellery - the precious metals.
I bought my gf a lovely pair of earrings for her birthday today. They are 18k and in a nice floral design.... 10% over spot.
