Is the whole lunar thing getting a bit over-played?

I dont like any of them and wont buy them.

I believe they were targeted at the asian market but then the "Lunacy" started

Anything but lunars.

I love the Lunar series, BUT, you guys/gals are right. When they come out with 10,000 different variations of the same theme, and every mint under the sun doing something with that theme, it does get old. That is why I really like the kook series or the panda series. I still like the lunars, but it was quite comical how the PM came out with 50 different variations of the same coin. I got a kick out of that.

I only get them for the limited 1oz variety, which despite being limited is probably the most common. I have a couple of goats but I have stopped buying rolls and I only have 2012 dragons in the different sizes.

I am not a fan of horoscopes in general and although I have nothing against Asian culture I have no particular affinity for it either.

I prefer indigenous wildlife, gives the silver a bit of interest.

The market will decide if they are over played I suppose, I'm sure mints don't go into a series without making sure it's a good theme

I agree - too many mints chasing the same idea.
Will now only buy Perth mint lunars. I think over time the lunars from better known mints will hold up, while others will fade away.
The 12 year cycle lends itself well to a coin series, and ensures that the next coin isn't rushed out as soon as the last one sells out (usually leading to demise of the series)

I would like to see other long term semi-numi Australian series from Perth mint that are not animal (or plant) based.

One idea I have that is new and different to what's out there is a 25 (or 50) gram 999 semi-numi series.

Four designs a year all released together out of sync with the koala/kook/lunar series.

"Hot, Not Who and What"

Hot A relatively new person/idea/device/technology that has taken off in the last year

Not A fallen star/ event /natural disaster/dodgy dealings etc over the last year

Who Tribute to a historical person that did something interesting/cool/before their time but is relatively unknown to the public

What A mixed bag year to year.. maybe a throwback to something culturally infamous, random, quirky or unique.. bit of a "What the.."

All with an Australian/New Zealand theme

Many Asian countries have some Chinese background, usually the most wealthy in those countries have Chinese heritage so without singling out China as the only main market Chinese horoscope and good luck signs are good sellers everywhere among Chinese Asians and non Chinese Asians alike who want some of the Chinese luck in wealth.

Problem is too many non Asian people have jumped on the lunars for pure re sale profit purposes and over flooded their potential market end game.

Largest amount of tourists in the world for quite some years now have been Chinese tourists and wealthy Asian Chinese, and not many Chinese tourists miss a tour of Perth Mint if visiting Perth.

Modern south east Asians living in Western countries have always put their fiat into PM,s and way before other stacker's realization of its potential :)

True, but it's only gotten worse since then. To the point where it's really getting a little ridiculous.

Come up with something new, already!

While, we're on the subject.. I actually don't consider the new Ghana Lunar Skulls, which I'm a fan of so far, to really be "lunar," per se.

Whether anybody agrees/disagrees, I look at them more as falling under the "death" & "animal skull" genres.

Not the first to do either of these, but also certainly not as over-played as the the whole primary lunar thing, either.

Okay, to answer my original question on which series I'd like to see.

Just a few off the top of my head...

- Arachnids: All kinds of cool spiders & scorpions & stuff

- Planets/Space-related: E.g., Saturn, moons, galaxies, comets, stars, etc.

- Insects: E.g., horse-fly, praying mantis, dragonfly, wasp, etc.

- Snakes: E.g., cobra, boa, coral, rattlesnake, etc.

Not sure how often this kind of stuff has shown up in the past, but I don't know of any modern series for any of these concepts as a series, anyway -- which IMO could turn out really cool with the right design & detail.

Its has in my opinion got worse because too many are buying so many to make a profit on a popular selling item making them seemingly more popular than they really are and I believe it will result in a loss for the highest premium buyers.

The Lunar Skull is a Pi## take on lunars and the one I would buy :)

The Lunar coins are a win...win.

Aussies like them, Europe loves them and Asian folk adore them.

More and more Asian folk are living in Australia which should see good demand for lunar coins both here and overseas, for now and in the future.

I like the bullion coins because they have a the Pinyin pictograph which Asian collectors and stacker's can relate to.

The 2015 Pinyin pictograph means 'goat'.

I also like the 2oz and 5oz bullion coins because that size are only available in the lunar series.

The 5oz Lunar coins have a face value of 8 dollars, 8 is also a lucky number.

The 1oz, lunar coins have a different diameter (45.6mm) to the Koala and Kookaburras (Kooks and Koala's are the same)

The 10oz and Kilo lunar's have the same diameter (100.6mm) which make them easier to stack together and unique ;) :D
