Try that "logic" on the cop who shot and killed the other victim of this event, orchestrated by a criminal, with his government issued gun.
I do not live in the fantasy silver screen world where batman saves the audience from the evil villain.

The problem with your argument, is by thinking that the laws prohibiting guns keeps guns out of reach of the criminals. If someone is hellbent on doing mayhem they are going to to do. The best response would be an armed citizen hopefully stopping the mayhem, instead of being a bunch of helpless victims/targets for the bad guy. When seconds count the police are only minutes away is what is said here. Honest citizens with clean records should be able to arm themselves appropriately here in the US. Fortunately where I live, a person can carry a concealed handgun and most smart folks do. There are far more stories of people protecting themselves successfully than there are crimes being committed (road rage shooting, etc) by CCW holders, but the local press doesn't like to cover those stories, only the bad ones.

I am happy with the current laws as they stand here in the US, although the socialist types are always trying to undue them. In states with concealed carry laws, the rate of robberies and violent crime have dropped according to statistics. Funny that the more liberal the city (anti- 2nd amendment), the more violent crime they have there (Chicago, NY, Washington DC, etc, etc).
You'd think it would be the opposite if strict gun laws worked?

Thanks Jim, that is a true dose of reality.
I have said for many years now, outlaw guns and only outlaws will have guns.
As for using the media bias to force a government agenda, well that's just an outrageous notion, right?
We do have restricted legal access to concealable s here in Aus BTW but no citizen carry under any circumstances.
It is in fact illegal to defend your life with any weapon here.
It's a good thing our crims are slower to commit a violent crime and the cops always arrive in time.
They usually shoot the crim rather than the victims most times also.

No, guns are not freedom in the same sense that guns don't kill people. People kill people, you see?
Guns mean power.
Freedom means being empowered.
If everyone has guns, everyone is equally empowered so theoretically everyone is free.
If no one has guns then no one is unequally empowered and everyone is free.
If, however, a supposedly elite group starts to promote the idea that only a few should have guns then you have the beginnings of a problem.
It's as old as mankind and much older than guns themselves.
The problem is in the Human element and has nothing at all to do with guns, rocks, sticks or anything else.
Freedom is not free.
It must be earned and it must be maintained. It is not for the foolish, the weak, the apathetic and the lazy.
Then there is wealth, but that's another story.

We don't need to destroy a sick or injured animal. Never need to hunt for food.

I'm not trying to pick a fight, just wondering how guns make you feel safer when the evidence is to the contrary. I haven't lived in the city all my life, and have lived on several farms (all without guns). You are thr one calling it a nirvana but refusing to work towards the possibility. A world without gun violence is possible in a world without guns.

Its the usa that has a problem with guns ( more so certian ethnic groups with mostly illegal guns ) the rest of the world with high % of gun owners dont have the same problems.

I dont believe either all guns should be banned ( being a firearm owner myself ) the system we have here is fine and I believe it is a pretty happy medium

A question on 'excessive self defence' may be raised depending on circumstances ie killing a person shoplifting a chocolate bar is likely to get you in deep trouble vs killing to protect yourself and others during a home invasion.
 
I'm not happy I had to hand in my semi automatic rifle during the call back many years ago. Now I have to make do with a slow pump action.

With respect, you are, in fact, mistaken.
I could give many examples as well as quote the relevant laws but for the sake of this discussion, suffice to say there are many instances of charges arising over the use of weapons and defending against these charges on the grounds of the use of reasonable force to prevent a crime is increasingly more difficult.
If a woman had an aerosol deodorant or hairspray in her purse and stated she carried this for the purpose of self defense she could actually be charged with going armed in public with intent simply by a implying this intention of use of that which would normally be a legal item to be in possession of.
To defend your actions legally, based on your interpretation of the alleged offenders intentions is problematic in all parts of the world but it seems particularly so in Australia, especially when "weapons" are alleged to be involved.
This is a complex subject, as all legal subjects are, but I hope this is sufficient to indicate that it's problematic, legally, in Aus to justify your actions if you biff an assailant with a stick and you run a very high risk of being charged yourself for your actions in defending yourself.
