should be very easy to id if you can post a decent picture of the hallmarks. or check 925-1000.com
is the 4th symbol a lion? the lion is the english sterling purity standard

Silver isn't a suitable material for use in knife blades as it is too soft. The handle is mother of pearl or some other material. There would be very little sterling in it if there is indeed any sterling silver

it looks like Sheffield Sterling but i personally wouldnt buy it without seeing a better picture .
'worth' x % below spot?

indeed, it doesn't make sense for this kind of blade to be made from sterling. perhaps they do exist, but this is probably not worth the trouble

It looks like the 4th mark is a Lion Passant which as PlatRyder says is the symbol of sterling purity. As for blade being made out of sterling - dowsnt make sense for a pocket knife but maybe it's supposed to be a letter opener??? No idea.

Its probably a fruit knife by the look of it which with fruit being soft you can use sterling silver for. It looks like a Crown hallmark which would be for Sheffield, and the date letter would be for 1848. Assuming what I can see is a crown and a capital E.

I reckon it's a mid Victorian 'travelling fruit knife' made at Birmingham Mint - value anything from $250-$400, depending on who's buying. Also having the original cushioned box which they came in would be a bonus - otherwise if you're buying it's worth spot :D There are a few useful comparisons here - which is coincidentally where I bought my Panerai and a diamond/gold eternity ring (bought her one from this venue for each of our children) for the Missus...
