if you speak in an authoritative voice, you can order these guys around, even if you're not even in a military. a guy flipping hamburgers at mcdonalds could even do it in his lunch hour, just for fun.
Also an instance where a fella (facial tatoos, shaved head fairly solid) went berco in a motor vehicle registry office with about 50 people in it, young road workers, people in suits, women and kids etc. only person who acted was a fella in uniform. He got up walked towards the fella, the fella was abusive but stopped dead in his tracks, hurled some more abuse and walked out. Fella in uniform never said a word, defused the situation. No-one hurt, not a word said........
I don't think you would find one person in the Australian military who is a "baby killer" they are your family members, neighbors, sons soccer coach. I think people may be getting a bit carried away.......
Sorry I hit "Thank" when I meant to hit quote and TBH I also regret hitting quote but anyways best of luck to you. FWIW the advice about choosing the Airforce over Army is very sound but then I'm 40 and I'm keenly aware of past football injuries.
Anyway - were you in the Department of Transport at the time that story happened? What stopped you from being the hero? The lack of a uniform?
