How would you spend $10K on gold & silver

Greetings SStackers.

I find myself in a situation where I have about ten thousand Aussie bucks with which to make a clever medium term investment (or at least look like I have), on behalf of a friend. Having spent a bit of time hanging around this forum, and already having a bit of a stack of my own at home, I'm quite keen to put some or all of it into PMs.

My questions are standard ones:

Is it a good time to buy PMs? Should I wait a bit? Spot looks good today, but who thinks the bottom is yet to come?
physical purchase or maybe the Perth Mint allocated?
gold, silver or what proportion of each?
Where / who to buy from?
Coins, bars? What size?

Obviously I need to find the best prices, could that involve buying from OS?

If I went all into shiny metallic stuff, I'd be thinking something like three ounces of Perth Mint gold coins or bars, a couple of Pamp kilo silver bars, four PM ten ouncers, a tube of 20 eagles or maples, and various smaller bits and pieces to make up the rest.

I'd be very interested to hear what some of the more knowledgeable and experienced folks around here would do if faced with the same opportunity. I know 10K isn't a massive amount, but I'm sure I can get a nice little pile of preciousness with it.

What would you do? Of course, you don't have to tell me. But I'd appreciate it. If you did...

Hi Silvestor,
Tis a good situation to be in!

Have a look at a few other threads in this section as a few people have been in your situation.

Blake.

I'm no expert but if I had 10 k to drop on precious metals it'd be all physical I'd probably go with 3 oz of. gold coins most likely maple leafs and some kooks. I'd personally like a 100 oz silver bar and I'd round the rest out with grizzlies, wolfs, maple leafs and dragons. Maybe a roll of pre 65 US quarters for kicks.

You mentioned medium term?

How long is that in months/years?

I reckon around ten years. Not really sure how medium that is, maybe tending long?

Ah, the dragons. Seems a hot topic round here. Not available till September I think. May be too late... maybe save some until they arrive?

Maybe even some well selected numismatics.

Thanks Blake17, will chase up earlier threads.

I'de go long on silver spot CFD for 15,000oz ($4908 margin) so you have maximum exposure and leave the other 5100 liquid for any fluctuations.

mind you i would be long/short depending on the market conditions at the time.

let him buy some physical first mate...

about the question, I would start anyone with about ~10k with 9x1kg bars, nice and simple with the most oz...Set a goal for the 10th bar, and once you get in you will learn what else to buy for yourself...

Newby Question:

May I ask what is all the hype with the upcoming release of the dragons? I am pretty much in the same situation as the OP so would love to know more before diving in.

Cheers

Hey Dude :) , Id go with Sargeant Argent suggestion, nice split down the middle to ensure that I have a good combination of faster growth PM's with abit of safety investment (assuming that you want PM's all the way). Actually when i decided to put 10K in earlier i pretty much did the same kind of thing.

Also make sure all your bars are the ones that are recognized so perth mint, PAMP that sort of stuff. Reason is if (in the of chance) you decide to travel overseas or anything like that your gold is accepted and wont attract a lower value or additional essay time.

Its a decent time to buy now too i think tho i might hold of *JUST* abit longer to see how we go with the prices :)

Well, dragons are cool, right? Seriously what animal is as cool as a dragon? And being part of the Lunar series they only come out once every 12 years.

Hmmm. Sounds cool. That would, however, involve a bit of a learning curve for me, being that I don't fully understand any of what you said. Maybe later on though... :/

All kilos? Maybe. Did want to score some gold too. I do get that would provide the most oz for the bucks.

Thanks. Taken on board. :)

I dont disagree with you but he did state it was for the short term, depending on his definition it's hard to say. Buying 10kg of physical is nice but if its only for the short term he will be eaten up by the premiums alone.

Thats the basis of my CFD recomendation.

Thanks all. Much food for my thoughts.

I guess ten years is considered longer term than I thought. The recipient in question is only 14 years old, so I considered it to be medium term for him. The thing is, he doesn't get to touch it for several years, so it does need to be a low maintenance style investment. That's why the CFD thing is probably not the go in this case.

In that sense, it's probably just as well to go with larger silver bars rather than 1oz coins, they're just gonna sit there for several years, and I did want at least three ounces of gold for him to hang onto. A bunch of 10 ounce bars does sound good, they seem to be a good popular size and easy to ditch if required. And pmstacker, I always stick to the well known stuff. No Garfields, no Tibetan Silver Dragons or Playboy bars around here. :)

Yeah. Cool Great. Thanks. Now I just gotta do it.... :o
