How much silver is in silver brazing/welding rods?

Hello,

I'm curious (if anyone knows) how much silver is in welding/brazing rods. I know some of them are made partly out of silver, but the exact quantity is unknown to me. Perhaps some aren't made of silver at all.

I wonder how much metal could be recovered from them or whether it's worth the effort.

From what I understand, silver content is generally 2-15%. So, unless your knocking them off from work, it is uneconomical to recover the silver. :D

In the 1980's silver mania when the price aproached $50 the workshop formen had the silver rods locked away and they were rationed out to each specific work order.

That was at one of the biggest resource companies in Australia!!!

There's still quite a few of those welding rod lockers around in workshops today.

You get 2%, 5%, 15% and 40% depending on the colour on the end of the rod! want to buy some?

That's too low percentage... would rather work in the office, it's not worth struggling with the rods if the silver amount is so tiny!

It is industrial silver, not meant for stacking,
The most high paid jobs Boiler makers, Plumbers that uses the rods.

No thanks, but wouldn't mind knowing the colour of the 40% rods.

To be honest I have never used 40% rods, 15% is to rich for my blood! I can TIG weld so if I need to buy special high percentage rods I will TIG instead. Works out a lot cheaper :)

We use 15% and 55% at work. 15% for copper to copper joins and 55% for copper to brass, steel, etc.
