How much is this rock worth? Any suggestions?

Nice.

http://www.statusint.com/result_coins.php?id=49 Item 5882. 10g of Au = $500 + 50% = about $700

The above has 10 x more gold but yours 3 times bigger. Someone here will be able to explain how to do a specific gravity test. Do not acept any offers until you've done that.

Edit to add, there's a nice little nugget for sale on the same pge, it's going for about spot + 16% + postage if anyone is interested.

Absolutely agree with W&F. However, do you not have a young relative who might be interested in this lovely specimen? As a gift to a young rock collector it would mean so much more coming from an uncle, rather than being just another purchase from a rock shop. Running out of storage space? You could do what my Mum has done, and put this lovely rock in your garden somewhere.

I withdraw my offer then as there are too many with opinions on value but no no solid offers is muddying this thread.

@hem9
Shyt, here I was thinking the thread was seeking advice (i.e. opinions), with 'offers' of interest coming in second. Oh wait, it is that type of thread. Good thing one of us is reading fkn English.

I never offered, only gave valuation. Made that very clear in my first post. As for the rest of my posts on this thread, they were not directed at you nor implying a change of mind wishing to buy.

I suppose being outside of the typical trade threads this aided in my discernment, knowing full well, both opinions and valuation of the article was encouraged.

No offense, but then again, I do not doubt you are offended (depending if you are the average human whom despises correction).

hem9, I always held you in high esteem buddy, my opinion on that has not changed.

Greetings and back to front. Troll I am, but not today tonight.

Eureka MomentsGday viewers.

I recently found this mineralised quartz rock whilst detecting and due to a lack of storage space I have decided to sell it. It would be a great thing for someone to own but I have no idea as to its value so I am seeking assistance as to what this may be.
No offense mate, the thread as a mixture of sale and query thus it was getting all muddied up. Since the op clarified it as a sale it's easier now. Appreciate your knowledge of rocks and crystals. it looks interesting as a paper weight

I love quoting myself, almost as good as looking in the mirror.

Here is a link, the example used is gold mixed with quartz. I reckon once you find how much gold is in the rock, then just add 50% as a starting price and auction it. Actually, I'd keep it and not auction it. Click on the link below:

Hey there W&F!!

If you don't understand how to do it send the rock to me and I'll do it.

To save me getting RSI from clicking thank you I officially thank everyone for their contributions so far.

This is part of the reason why I didnt put this in the for sale section. I wanted to display an item and gather peoples opinions about it with the intention of selling it. Similar to anybody else starting a thread about a coins price.

Sorry for confusing anyone.

If it bounces on Bitumen then you know it is light and easy.

+1 grave test

Because I find many small pieces of gold I have been able to give a lot of personal PM gifts to many family and friends. I recently gave a neighbors kid a couple of little nuggets that I found on her first day at school. She will always remember when she got them.

I have a fair few specimen pieces that I have found and in keeping with my policy of not being a completely greedy bastard and keeping them to myself I choose to offer some exclusively to people here. This gives you all the opportunity to maybe make a purchase of an item that would mean so much more coming from an Uncle rather than giving them kmart vouchers or playstation games. :)

Not everybody gets to go out and find gold. Most of you would probably be much more gainfully employed doing real work and stuff. Do not snort at an opportunity to buy and own such items. They dont grow on trees.

I have lots of nice rocks in the garden. No gold ones but many with fully formed crystals I have found in my travels. Gardens sorted...how bout yours? :D

I did have a garden full of opal colour (nothing superbly great in my eyez - i.e. no gemmy stuff)), but they were the days of wenches. :(
Would be nice to have such a garden again. Give me half a year and a chainsaw later.

I shall attempt a specific gravity test tomorrow and publish my findings. Not certain if there will be high enough percentage of gold to the total mass (1 in 200-400) to get an accurate reading via water displacement. However I will have a crack at it.

I call that the "hiho Method" - "If you could have one coin, what would it be and what would you pay for it?" ;)

I have conducted a specific gravity test.

The measurements were:
Dry weight - 198.34 grams
Wet weight - 122.67 grams

198.34 - 122.67 = 75.67

198.34 / 75.67 = 2.62 This is the specific gravity of the specimen.

The average specific gravity of quartz is 2.63

2.62 - 2.63 = -0.01

-0.01 x 75.67 = -0.7567 grams

By my calculations there should be a void where the gold is.

At the bottom of the specific gravity test page it states "The specific gravity for quartz is 2.60 - 2.65." Without knowing the exact specific gravity of the quartz (or any other minerals besides gold that may be present) it is not possible to get an accurate reading using this method. This is due to the large size of the rock compared to the small amount of gold. It does demonstrate that the amount should be less than 1 gram so the visible gold would be all that there is. It aint worth smashing up as there are no huge hidden goodies.

I have decided to accept hem9's offer for the specimen. This rock is no longer for sale.

Thanks to all contributers for their ideas and opinions and suggestions and to anyone who kept their ideas, opinions and suggestions to themselves I thank you also. :)

Hey EM, if you ever find another specimen, PM me. Got no dollars now though :( too busy buying cheap gold rings below spot as an adornment for myself. Maybe in a few months. ;)

I was going to give you the benefit of my vast experience but decided what the hell, the mans a complete cad! undeserving of my attention.
