How are the Noah's Ark (Armenia) kilo coins?

I have the 1-oz & 5-oz versions. Really like the obverse, which I think would be pretty sick in a large size.. :D

The reverse is cool enough.


Wondering if the kilo would be worth it someday, at the right price. Probably most concerned about minting quality..

They are really cool. I have some 10oz and some 1/4 ounce. The older 1/4 ounce are apparently fetching a good premium (I only have 2014 1/4 unfortunately).
 
They're really nice, cept they tend to develop milkspots due to their shiny finishing.

The 5 kilo is an amazing coin. I saw one of these when it was on display. It comes in a very nice box too.

I'll have to check mine during the next visit, but unless I'm confusing it with another coin, I seem to recall a small milk-spot or two on the 1-oz version.

I wonder if they take better precautions at the mint for the larger sizes? My 5-oz was fine, last I knew.


The dealer's photos have a zoom feature.. And I can see some tiny chips along the rim of the kilo.


Still not sure. Not a slam-dunk easy decision for me, like it was for my other 2 kilo coins.. which sort of tells me something.

Might just pick up a 10-oz at some point, and go from there.

I just looked closely at some 10oz ones. I see spots on a 2013 AND a 2014 coin! I have one that appears spot free. Must be lucky!
 
Why would shiny coins be more prone to milkspots? Or is it just that you can see them on a shiny surface?
 
The 5 kilo is a pain in the butt to store but they are impressive, I would stay away from them.
The kg ones are nice.

I don't believe they're more prone, per se.. But that they simply stand out that much more on a flat mirrored area -- which will amplify every imperfection, including pits & scratches on capsules.

One reason why I'm not always a huge fan of proofs/proof-likes.


Eh, those milk-spots won't matter much after a few decades of toning.. :D
 
I wouldn't mind a 10oz and kilo one day, if can be bought at sensible prices. The sound of milk spots is a little off putting though.

Recently checked..


Not that I have many, but for my 1-oz version, half of them have spots. Only like one here, one there. But still.

And my 5-oz has a couple, 1 on each side. :mad:


Good news is, there aren't many, and they're all pretty small & very faint -- for now.


Still like them for a low-premium coin. Though the kilo is debatable at this point.. Definitely not at the top of my list.


Passing on the Somalia kilo for the same milk-spotting reason.
