Hiding metal horror stories

There was a guy on the Kitco forum from Qld - he had a stash somewhere in the order of $70k buried on his property dug up and stolen. Some immediate family members that had been told the location. Went to get it and it was gone.

Did the neighbor see him bury the stash in his garden?

Found the original post over on Kitco:

Hope this serves as a warning to others.

Like many others around the world we lost a lot of our retirement money in 2008 but I managed to get a good amount out of our fund by retiring early (56) and starting a small business.

We bought gold and silver with the money and buried it deep in a location on our property.

Although we bought the gold to protect our savings against inflation we were gratified to see the value of our investment steadily increase.

Our lifes's goal is to be self sufficient on 1 or 2 acres of land on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of Queensland Australia but because of the existing Real Estate bubble still expanding in Aus., we cannot yet afford the land.

We decided to take our small internet business "on the road" and travel round our beautiful Australia until we could afford the land.

We found our perfect motor vehicle for towing our trailer and needed a temporary "Loan" of $5000 from our gold stash to make up the price of the vehicle.

We went to dig up our gold yesterday and to our horror someone had dug up the gold and stolen it (about $70,000.00 worth)!
Someone obviously knew where to look and we have only ourselves to blame as we have been vocal to a lot of people about the world's funny money, debt and the value of precious metals.

Hopefully our experience will encourage other gold investors to take extra care in what they say to others.

I asked at the time, it's not the same user on this forum who goes by the same userid.

If he can't afford the land, what property was it buried on?

Edit: can't read original thread because not a member there and cbf.

Just reread the bit I posted...

Obviously they don't own their "life's goal" land. Didn't say anything about not owning a house already etc.

oic.

Hmm, maybe you could bury a few old unexploded bomb shells (authentic-looking but fake) on the property to deter metal detectorists?

How about storing it in a septic tank?

Septic Tank works!
Call Kenny to retrieve it.

I purchased a 2oz Kook for my son for Xmas being his birth year I put it away in a very safe place. Anyway come Xmas do you think I could find it, I literally pulled apart every hiddy hole I thought I had but nothing. Then a few weeks ago I was shuffling some paperwork and guess what I found. Phew I knew I wasn't going crazy. Certainly not as big as the OP's but caused me stress none the less. At Xmas I gave him 2x1oz and said I do have a different one for you but in the interim here are these.

Slightly off topic, but I love it when I find stuff I didn't even know I'd lost. Like cash in a suit pocket, or that small bag of junk silver that my wife stuffed in a drawer when she was cleaning up.

Not worth as much as other stories here but i'm currently misplaced my 1/10 US Eagle that i put somewhere until it was worth the trip to storage. Can't seem to find it. Damn small coins.

Shit. Some scary stories. Wish I had ten kg to lose! All my stuff is in one secure place so it would be pretty hard to lose it. I like the idea of multiple locations if you HAD to bury it. Has anyone ever dug a 1metre deep hole. That is some serious effort. FOR SERIOUS. I don't think it is worth all the physical effort. It would take close to a full day of digging to get anywhere close to being finished. And that whole time are you looking around to ensure no one spotted you? Screw that idea.

Pay for a storage shed or better yet, get PM to store them for you.

The best time to lose a small coin is when you just opened it from the mail and playing with it.. go to make a coffee, have a few sips.. come back to your coin and it's somehow managed to shuffle itself under the lounge or under papers and paraphernalia on the desk. If you want something to play with - buy a deluxe class transformer toy - THEY will keep you entertained for hours and you wont be as pissed if you lose it. Bumblebee as the 1974 Camaro looks terrific. Much better than the 2008 Concept.

He may have had metal in them but i saw an old guy on the weekend in Sydney try to stop his (old) wife chasing after the bus door only to have his dentures fall out onto the road. He could only watch as the bus drove over them. He was Pi$$ed.
I guess this story isn't kinda hidden metal.

Sorry but i'm a bit dubious about this story. Burying it in a National park? Do you know that it is illegal to undertake such an activity? :P
I'm trying to work out scenarios as to why it was buried in such a manner.
Didn't get on with family to look after it...
Live in a unit block thus can't bury in own backyard...

As stated above, what was wrong with a rented secure storage facility?

I'm not saying that you didn't do it but I just find it hard to believe.
Looking forward to photos but i don't know what that would prove.

No, show me the law that says it's illegal to bury personal possessions in a national park. I'm sure it's even more illegal to bury metal on someone else's private land.

I have no family here to look after it. You assume too much.

Had no backyard, owned no property here.

Don't trust "secure storage facilities".

As a counterpoint, I buried a shotgun in a PVC tube in the USA, near Phoenix, on public land, and 25 years later went back to find it perfectly undisturbed.

Location is everything.

I have photos but this board does not allow photo attachments and I'm not going to link to the photos on my own photo repository because it could lead to my identity being compromised.

As far as metal detectors go, I've heard it's best to bury metals under a concrete slab. From outside a slabbed dwelling, dig diagonally under the slab.

If anyone has seen a 1/10 gold eagle lying around can you please PM me, i can't find mine.
Damn small thin coins.

Hope this works.

Wow!!!, you were bloody lucky to get it back. You will never forget that in a hurry.

I'm fortunate that I have family with land so I have lots of options.
