Hello to all you silver stackers. Im a new guy here and I would like to get as much info or the right way to get started. I have started with about six, 1 ounce bar of silver and two 1 gram bars of gold, but that's for another group....lol. I have been fortunate enough to have in my possession some silver that my dad had before he passed away. My mom just gave it to me last month. 37 silver eagles and about 26 half dollars and a crap load of dimes the years range from 1963 to about 1860. About roughly 10% are in okay condition and about 1 or 3 that are completely worn, and to top it off I have a baby spoon and fork that are silver also. Can anyone tell me what would be good purchases and how many ounces should I buy in a years time. Hope to hear from you guys.....:)

No one can tell you how much to buy as no one knows your situation, but you will be able to get an idea of what other people are doing and if it makes sense to you then you can always copy them.

Welcome to the forums, the answer to your questions lie hidden amongst the many threads :)

Keep buying more of what you have - Silver Eagles, pre 64 half dollars and quarters, and generic 1oz rounds/bars. Buy an amount that you can afford to do without each month. You don't want to get in to a position where you are forced to sell in the short term. Buy an amount you are comfortable with holding on to in the medium to long term so that you give yourself a good chance of realising a profit.

Welcome aboard...Chicago :) Well there could be a lot of silver buried around the upper side of town from the roaring twenties. :)

You'll do fine stacking just American Silver Eagles as here the most popular coin in the US and easy to sell. There is cheaper bullion but all depends on what you want in your silver (Gov minted and legal tender or generic round for a little cheaper).

Only invest what you can afford to lose ;) Cut down on excessive and unnecessary spending, put those $'s into PM's and forgot about them for the short term.

And welcome :)

Hey Chicago, as you can see I'm relatively new, as well. Here's what I have gathered: There are lots of knowledgeable people here and lots of varying opinions. Take it all in, listen and try to piece it all together. All of us are smarter than one of us.

Just my opinion, the Aussies seem more passionate about the shiny stuff and have a hand up on us American blokes. That's okay, we're on the same side.

By and large, people here will tell you to not ask them what you should do but use your own judgement based on your specific situation. Only you know.

Happy stacking!

Welcome Amer11,

Everyone has a different idea of what is the best strategy and since we are all different, everyone could be right at the same time.

That said, I personally have diversified; some blobs (common, non-denom bars and rounds), US junk silver coins, 1 oz bullion coins (like ASE's and Libertads), larger size bullion coins, some semi-numis and numismatic (collector) coins, and some graded coins.

Diversification may not be easy for everyone because of where they live, but for some, it's a strategy they follow.
