This is a big story but not yet reported by the Australian media.

Seen it here in Sydney on TV a couple of times.

Just saw a segment on SBS News about this, so it's definitely in the media here.

The truth has emerged of how a gang pulled off an audacious jewellery heist by making off with the loot in wheelie bins.

CCTV footage shows the raiders breaking into a safe deposit box company where they spent two nights drilling through a reinforced concrete wall to reach the vault.

Police issued nine still images from the CCTV cameras yesterday in an attempt to trace the jewel thieves.

They stole an estimated 60 million ($116.6 million) in gems, cash and other valuable items, which they stuffed into wheelie bins before loading them into the back of a Ford Transit van.

In a high security facility, gotta wonder why no one monitors the CCTV feeds

There will definitly be a movie of this:

* An expert has revealed how a Mr Big is likely to have hired elite thieves from eastern Europe and Israel to pull off the operation.

* Former bank robber Noel "Razor" Smith, 54, has analysed the film and believes, despite their professionalism, the gang "got greedy" by returning to the vault on Saturday night. He believes they will have been given a list of "target" jewels by the raid mastermind.

* A security firm reported the alert but it was graded by Scotland Yard as "no police response required".

More from Noel "Razor" Smith. Looks like a ginger was involved:

After being shown segments of the CCTV footage which caught images of men dubbed Mr Ginger, Mr Strong, Mr Montana, The Gent, The Tall Man and The Old Man he said: "These men are serious professionals.

"They will be a crew made up of foreign nationals, likely eastern Europeans and Israelis, who have never met and are together for this one job.

"They will have clean records in the UK and be paid a salary during the planning so they don't commit any other crimes.

"A Mr Big will have bought information from an insider, someone with a lot of knowledge about that firm, and assembled this crew.

"They will have been put up in luxury while they planned this, all with false identities, telling each other nothing about who they are or where they are from. It could have taken up to two years to plan something like this."

He believes the gemstones will have been smuggled to Amsterdam, the diamond cutting capital of the world.

Interesting to see the drill hole through the concrete. I thought high security vaults used rebar or some other security measure within the concrete to slow down this sort of thing, but it appears in this case to be standard non-reinforced concrete.

What a joke, from the photos it looks like an old building retro fitted on the cheap with some non rebar, non anti drill flakes concrete.

And how are people going to get their stuff out of there? I mean if you were a crook wouldn't you sit in a building opposite jotting down plate numbers or getting people followed?

Given the amount of time they had I don't think it would have made a lot of difference although steel shaving aggregate and rebar should have been installed all the same. It seems like the plain concrete wall was all that separated the safe deposit boxes from next door...

I don't know anything specific about this SDB storage, but top be fair many SDB services aren't super high security, they're a step up from a safe at home. If you really want security there are proper high security services you can access that take a wholistic approach to security where this sort of thing wouldn't happen. Honeywell do a lot of interesting high security stuff like that.

The stupid thing is that even if that concrete was an existing structure that couldn't be changed when the SDB's were moved in it would have been relatively trivial to create a more physically secure space inside with additions to all 6 sides of the room.

The only thing that really bothers me about this is that there were likely some very old and rare coins as well as very expensive beautiful jewelery that could end up being clipped out and melted down. I die a little inside when I think of some Montenegrin with a pair of pliers pulling the diamonds out of a Faberge bracelet.

Just dress up like a tourist and you'll be fine. The fact that we sell other stuff gives you cover.

Sexy Beast is the best SDB heist movie of all time.

Just downloaded & watched it. (wow, they do drop a lot of C-bombs!)
The actual heist is only a few minutes, I like this genre more for the planning/execution/getaway aspects.
Enjoyable though.

Pensioners plead guilty over $21m diamond heist

Four men, three of them pensioners, have pleaded guilty to being part of a daring multi-million-dollar raid in London's jewellery business district earlier this year.

Brian Reader, 76, John Collins, 74, Terry Perkins, 67 and Daniel Jones, 58, appeared at Woolwich Crown Court and admitted conspiracy to burgle the Hatton Garden Safety Deposit Ltd building during the long Easter holiday weekend in May.

Items worth more than 10 million pounds ($21 million) were stolen when intruders broke into the vault where many of the area's gold, diamond and jewellery businesses kept stock and made off with the contents of 73 safety deposit boxes.
