You mean you have a bar that actually says.99.63%? That's pretty cool. Only a guess but it might be an assay bar where they've refined a product and then run a highly accurate assay/test series on it to find out exactly what's in it.

It's the purity. Harrington individually assayed batches of 1oz bars. The weight will be slightly over 1 Troy oz, ensuring you get 1oz of 9999 equivalent.

Cost of achieving 9999 is way higher than 99XX.
I doubt those gold bullion coins are real 9999.
Anyone in a university metallurgy lab would do a simple test? Homogenize a 1/20 oz gold coin, say kangaroo, and put it in XRF or MS, to have the metal profile.
If it is under 9999 we could claim some damage from the mint.

That is pretty cool, makes sense that they would weigh it a bit more than an oz. to get 9999 value.
