Great fun and experience.

Also don't spill it, it's valuable!![]()
Be careful with molten metal and water, they have only 1 reaction EXPLOSIONRyaneod said:Levant said:Here is a tip for melting silver, you'll have to heat it to at least 962 degrees celsius or 1764 degrees fahrenheit. Not an easy task...

Yeah, it looks like I am going to need to source some torches . . .Orrr, see if there is a setting on my oven for 1764
I like that little furnace that Silver Addict has over on the BS site. I will have to start out and see if I even enjoy doing it. Then again, I better keep a bucket of water, some butter and a burn kit nearby!

Levant said:To be honest there is nothing quite like handling liquid metal, and I don't mean mercury. Last time we fired up the furnace it was at dusk, and pulling out a glowing crucible and pouring out metal is quite a spectacle. (and no, I haven't melted silver yet).
I recommend starting out with a torch though, and a small quantity of silver, that way if you stuff something up, your loss is minimised.

Levant,
Thank you for the tips, and I am going to start small, just I am a weird planner that likes to have all my ducks in a row before starting, because I HATE to start something and have to stop 15min in to order something that will take 5 days to get to me. So, trying to line those duckies up right . . . I know there will be hiccups, but I like having the tools I will need.

The Perth Mint says they also do silver granules, but no price listing as far as I can see. Perhaps give them a call.

Cheers for that, I'll have to look into it! I'm living in adelaide and I have gone to the exchange jewelers and there pretty costly.
There is a site that will give you the ability to make a cheap furnace ( I've been really lazy but I bought the flower pot furnace manual )
http://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/
It's a great site
Thing is I want to see if my molds turn out but I bought a propane and touch to melt only 1 oz of silver and it would get hot enough. I read that mapp gas would but I don't want to waste more money if it doesn't as I don't have an oxygen torch or anything.

Hey guys, we do indeed sell silver granule, just please note that silver granule isn't considered an investment so there will be 10% GST on top of our listed prices (this applies to anywhere else you buy granule too).
Just make sure you start with a small bar, we tried making a large one once and it turned out terrible![]()
