Guan Yi medal by Shenyang Mints - Romance of 3 Kingdom character

So, what happened to this one, anyway?

Like it disappeared off the face of the earth..

Last I saw was an ended eBay listing back in mid-May.

Now nowhere to be found.

The higher mintage one (80mm) was 500 quantity.

All quickly sold out to strong hands?

It is pretty sexy in person.. And I've got mine. :D

Just wondering..

I stopped watching at the point the horse was knocked down...harming animals is a big problem in my book.

Those are a few scenes from Part 1 of a Chinese war movie / Asian box-office hit called "Red Cliff"..

About 50% factual, with Guan Yu playing a role in the story.

I can't find a free copy of Part 1 with English sub-titles..

If anybody can find a link, would be much appreciated. :D

But I did find Part 2 (quality isn't the best, but acceptable).

Actually a pretty good movie, once it gets rolling..

I am a fan of martial arts films...have been since the 1980's and the classic Run Run Shaw films. Though I can't recall ever having seen Red Cliff, I recognized a number of the actors in the film. I love lots of fighting in martial arts films but I definitely don't like when animals become victims of mistreatment in cinema. I have horse experts who are friends of mine and they've told me in the past that there's no way to swiftly knock a horse over without that causing some injury to a horse.

Hollywood used to horse trip in certain older films resulting in numerous fractures or broken legs of horses. Just totally not cool at all.

anyone see the big one been graded?

I have all in omp. I will continue this set. 4 medal in a series

For those interested & have some spare time..

There's a TV series from 2010, called "Three Kingdoms"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Kingdoms_(TV_series)

Based on the old novel that Andrew spoke of in the OP..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_of_the_Three_Kingdoms

The TV series isn't as good as the "Red Cliff" movie, IMO.. Though still finding it pretty addicting, heh.

Covers a lot more, but sometimes it seems like certain scenes can drag on a little too long. Still worth it.

Something different.. Stuff most outside China probably don't know about or have seen.

You can find it on a couple YouTube channels, that have English sub-titles..

Just search for "Three Kingdoms English"

There are like 95 episodes, each about 40 minutes long.

Video quality is only 360p, but not so bad if you full-screen it.

Now if you'll excuse me, off to finish episode 15..

This is gonna take a while!

Dude, why is this Cao Cao guy being such a jerk? I totally need to kick his butt.. And I don't need Guan Yu's help for that. I'll do it right after snack-time.. Servants, bring me my cookies & juice-box. Chop, chop!

Looks like Gatito is totally immersed in the 3 Kingdoms films.

I remember as a teen, after us boys finished watching the Saturday afternoon kung-fu films on tv and taking a few hits on the joint, we would start to fight each other, thinking we were kung-fu masters....it was such a hoot!
:)

.

Huh? What are you talking about?

It's not like I'm currently in the middle of episode 34 or anything.. *ahem*

They are enjoyable for me, not gonna lie.

Just catching up on some Chinese history, since this story is somewhat factual.

As I privately mentioned to somebody earlier, this series is addicting..

Of course, you have to expect a bit of cheesyness, as well.

Some bits of bad acting, bad sound effects, bad battle stunts, etc.

But overall, it's a great story, especially if you like that whole war / empire thing.

Also gives one a better appreciation for Chinese culture -- and medals.

Perhaps the mints are being even more diligent and careful these days when producing these massive medals. I suppose with such a large surface area and so many repeated strikes that must be made to achieve such high relief, I can see why there are so few 70 graded medals out there of any year.
