Gold Sovs Now $1500+ Melt and Fast Becoming Unaffordable?

Ok, so gold sovereigns are now over $1500 bullion value and fast becoming unaffordable as an economic low-cost gold coin stacking option for some of us.

So what's the alternative? Are half sovereigns the new full sovereigns, or are there other alternatives?

I have never been a big fan of the European 20 Franc type coins, and even these are now $1200 melt.

Your thoughts, ladies and gentlemen.

This is amazing, never would have thought they’d ever get to $1500+ a pop.

Selling for spot these days, whereas a few years ago they’d change hands for upwards of $50 above melt.

I’m thinking, and somewhat hoping that people are still able to afford them at spot in the near term and then when gold spot settles and the new price floor becomes the new normal, premiums may remain low or creep up over time

Fewer and fewer people can afford to buy gold now. The ones that they can afford, like the 1/10ths, have super high premiums. I don’t think there is a substitute for the sovereign, but the half sovereign is a great little coin.

I share your sentiments, neonuke, and have some real fond memories of stacking and dealing in sovereigns over the years.

But I feel we are entering uncharted territory as the fiat money system dies in front of our eyes.

We are going higher, much higher in gold prices, and I would not be surprised if SOVs are over $2k real soon.

So what other options do we have to stack economy lower-priced gold coins without blowing the budget?

I know there are the bullion tenths and twenties of an ounce that we all have, but I crave for an old-time circulating type of coin alternative.

The only one I can think of that I like is the gold ducat

But the only problem with the ducats is that the only ones you can buy at anywhere near spot prices are the Austrian restrikes, and I dont
wish to stack them in any quantity.

For alternatives, I think as Craig mentioned it’s the 1/10 oz, then there’s half sovs and maybe LMU 20 Francs / Lira etc.

All of these have higher premiums than sovs.

I also remember gold $200 coins were selling like hotcakes back in the day, but have slowly but surely fallen out of favour for some reason and can’t even be sold under spot most times I’ve seen them for sale

Losing premiums on coins are good problems to have. I rather higher gold prices and no resell premium than to have lower gold prices with higher resell premiums.

I love Sovs, very good chance they will be the last Gold I ever let go of if needed. In fact all my old gold /silver coins as they bring back fond memories from childhood and then there's the memories the stacker bars bring... oh dear, selling is just too hard

I guess that $1,500+ SOVs buying prices are not as big a deal for you fiat-cashed-up city cityslickers as it is for us poor county cousins.

I am too fiat money challenged to be buying sovereigns at these prices.

He's a pic of some of my recent gold coin purchases, got them for $250 a pop, now worth over $300 each.

These are the "new sovereigns" for poor beggars like me.

they are a great buy. Without looking up the weights etc, at least these let people experience the old gold coins. So much more character than a boring 1/10th.

Ducat restrikes are not the same. They don’t have the history but for many people, gold is still gold.

May I ask why you don't like the ducat restrikes?

Because once you have seen one 1915 Austrian Gold Ducat restrike, you have seen them all!

It is an artificially remanufactured product masquerading as an old-time circulation strike coin, not my cup of tea.
