Gold notes - A New Way to Hold Gold

There's an interesting article about a company, Valaurum, that is manufacturing gold-infused currency notes.

In short, a fractional gram's worth of gold is affixed to layers of polyester, creating a note called an "Aurum" similar in dimension and thickness to a U.S. dollar bill. This gold (usually 1/10th or 1/20th of a gram) is commercially recoverable. So an Aurum offers similar potential as a coin or bar, in terms of providing a vehicle for storing and exchanging known, dependable increments of precious metals just in much smaller (and more affordable) amounts than commercially available to date.

The big idea here? In a world where a 1oz coin of gold costs over $1,200, an Aurum will let you hold a few dollars' worth of gold in a single note. If you've got pocket change, you can be a precious metals owner.

And you don't have to change your behavior. You can store and transport an Aurum in your billfold along with your dollars.

The gold can be recovered just by heating a note to melt the polyester, leaving the gold behind.

I think this is a pretty nifty idea, but I think the price would have to be near spot for it to catch on. Currently the price of a 1/10oz note is 10 USD - Just over double spot. And of course forgeries might be a problem.

Yes I did, but the premium has to be the same as a 1oz coin otherwise it will just be a specalist product and can never be used as money.

$80 a gram, ouch.

yeah i was gonna pick up a couple for giggles but they only have one design and the price... oooofff.

if they were to get that down to say 20% over spot, like an average minted coin...

would any of you guys/gals buy?

there is actually more than one design, i have 3 different ones.
i brought them off maggie before she left us. bless her soul.
there is a prospector, the tree thing, and a christmas note, does anyone know about the prospector and christmas ones, how many where produced and what not?
thanks :)

I stack mostly silver.. i have 3/10ths of a gram of gold in these things for novelty they were available and i thought why not??.. found them recently hiding in a book to keep them flat. Wont be selling them any time.
Just curious as to any information about them..

^^^ Well now isn't that interesting...
most exciting is this: a (small) sovereign central bank is deep in negotiations with Valaurum to replace its existing national currency with aurum notes, creating a true precious-metals backed monetary system. As best we know, this would make it the only one in existence in the world.

Is there anyone in Australia selling these?

I bought a few sets last year, they had three different notes on sale at the time, though only one was shown on the website. Their customer service was very good.

The postage is the same for one single note as it is for at least 21 (the number I bought), it was about $24 last time, so not worth it for a single note.

The discount once you hit 10 notes is also worth considering, basically buy ten and get two free or get $2 off the price of each one

Last year I bought seven sets of three different notes and got them posted to Australia. I was able to sell them over in Australia for less than people could get them from the company in the states. In the end I offered free postage, the same unit cost as the parent company, sold six sets within a couple of hours and ended up with one set for myself. The savings from the bulk discount covered the cost of postage from the states and within Australia.

You could probably have charged more if you didn't mind holding on to them a bit longer but I just wanted a set for myself and wanted to share the cost of postage. Anyone who wants a single note should be put off by the % over spot and the postage but if you buy a decent number you should be able to make some money and keep one for yourself.

Shortly after that some of the dealers got them in, Maggie sold some, but then they put the unit cost up and took away the discount so it wasn't economical to get any more. It looks like they have dropped the price back to what it was and reinstated the discount.

They do custom runs if you ask them nicely but the order has to be for "several hundred" minimum.

I wouldn't mind one but with the AUD not doing so well I am holding off buying anything from abroad.

GST would apply on these in Australia as well :/
I expect there would be no GST if it was an actual currency, so what if "Hutt River" used these as their currency?
