Going through customs with bullion

Hi, I've never done this, but I might be bringing a few ounces of gold with me when traveling internationally. Do you put it in hand luggage or checked baggage? Do you have to declare it? Any advice gratefully received, thanks

depends where you are travelling if you have to declare, e.g in oz yes you do if value over $1000. each country would have different rules. always in hand luggage and never check in, like any other valuable item.

No you don’t have to declare if the total value is under $10k
Eg: 1oz gold = $6k and cash $3k, total value $9k
I’ve been pulled up twice over the years by a young customs officers when leaving Australia. Once for a gold and cash combo and the other was for $8k cash
I state the customs legislation on both occasions then the officer spoke to their supervisor and I was waved through
If you’re traveling with a partner, then split the amount so you’re both under $10k.
But I suggest you check the legal requirements of your destination.
Most countries are the same with a $10k limit BUT……. Check in what currency the limit is in.
EG: Australia $10k AUD
Malaysia $10k USD
New Zealand $10k NZD
Then calculate the exchange rate
Always in my wallet and the missus always in her purse.
