"In the century ahead, we won't actually produce or manufacture anything."

"But only if we keep lifting productivity, if we keep driving innovation, keep generating new ideas."

And this is doublespeak for:

"But only if you buggers keep working even harder, don't retire till 75, and find new ways to enslave your Asian neighbors."

Stooges to whom? That's our system of democracy.
What I really hate with our different parties is their absolute rigidity to the party line. If you cross the floor you're an outcast. In the American system members vote against the party all the time. Here it never happens unless it's a 'conscious' vote on an issue like gay marriage. There's no flexibility at all here within the party system.

Oh yeah and thats the most turtled democratic system in the world. Th day we become a republic is the day the likes of gillard will turn the system into a police state

And FWIW here I didn't say anything about adopting the American system. I said that members of parliament should be able to cross the floor without being sanctioned/excommunicated from their own party. That's supposedly what a democratic system is all about. The major parties are anything but democratic though.

It may have been born out of that - but doesn't mean that is what it contained?

As far as I was aware, and perhaps I don't know US history as well as you do, but the US constitution and bill of rights basically gives people as many freedoms as possible, and as much power against the Govt as possible - in order to keep it in check. I don't have the quotes on me, but i've heard many quotes of the 'founding fathers' that basically warn the people about political dangers and the reasoning behind specific legislation to that effect.

Nowdays the US constitution has been 'interpreted' by judges for 'intent' and basically bastardised to oblivion.

So they had a good system, IMO, until around the time the Federal Reserve came in.

Do govts follow constitutions? My impression was that if they are inconvenient to what they want to do, they disregard them. You know the whole appeal to safety thing? Let us do what we want because we need to so we can protect you....

Maybe Liberal will make a difference, I don't know. I don't have the same faith as you do. To use an analogy here, I don't want to get better conditions for the slaves, I want to free the slaves. That's where my effort goes and it's much more long term than either the next election or the next decade or possibly (probably) more.

If you guys succeed in getting a new constitution and bill of rights, and make sure the govt follow them, I will sing your praises (seriously), but it's not a project I'm interested in.
