Gilded Mouse - rare????

I know the gilded series aren't popular in Australia.

However - I was just looking at the sales numbers for the series 2 2008 Gilded Mouse. It has a mintage of 50 000 but sales of only 5394 - which is exceptionally low for a 1 oz lunar coin, even a gilded one. The other series 2 gilded coins are much more (Ox - 15001, Tiger - 11534). I'm not sure if they can re-mint these in later years or if they are like the other lunars where (with the exception of the 1oz bullion and the 1kg) after that year they can no longer be produced by law (anyone confirm or deny this??).

I remember when you had to discount the 5oz mouse because nobody wanted it and now people realize there is only a few thousand out there - the premiums are getting ridiculous.

Assuming these can't be minted up to their limit and there are only 5394 out there - are these a bit of a sleeper?

Low mintages are one aspect, desirability would be another.

Would people want the gilded mouse as a stand alone coin, or only as part of the full set? How many people are collecting the full set? Judging by the previous years coins still gathering dust in the Post Offices and mint I would say not many, and how many are going to start now and work their way back?

The key coin would be the gilded dragon if people were after a full set and that is not massively popular. I doubt the snake or horse are going to get people fired up over the series if the dragon didn't.

I guess there is a difference between a rare coin, and a coin that is rare because no one wanted it.

I guess if you could find a mouse going for issue or less then it wouldn't hurt to get it but I can't see anything that would suddenly (or even progressively) make this coin popular. But a remint would destroy the value.

I would not put it past the mint to gather up all the unsold gilded rubbish, stick it in a presentation case with something that people may actually want but is not available in any other form, and then resell them as a collection. It would be easy for them to do, probably easier than scraping all the gilding off and remelting them.

currently you can get the 2012 one ounce gilded silver lunar dragon off of apmex for less(if you buy bulk) than you can get the non gilded version. At least you could do that yesterday...

Avoid the gilded coins, Lunar, Kookaburra, Koala etc like the plague. Perennial failures the lot.

I think one coin is ok just for show...but never expect it to appreciate in $...just you appreciate the gilded coins are good enough. :P

@Honestcoins...the regular one must be overppriced at apmex.

Inspite of the negative feedbacks regarding the gilded lunar series, I'm one of the minority who actually loved them. However, I'm only treating these coins as collector coins, which less likely will be selling the set in the future. Whether they will increase or decrease in value, it really doesn't really matter (to me anyway) :)

I only have the dragon one, and that was because I am collecting the dragon series and it was easy to get hold of! I don't even particulalry like that one.

About the only gilded coin I have seen so far that I like is the Gilded Taku.

so long as the mint is not increasing their price out of proportion :) can but 1 just to complete a set.

the one on apmex, must be the gilded coins that come in roll and no box. wow (with paper cert)

I buy the loose coin without a box as I've already got a presentation case for all the 12 coins, every coin comes with a cert.

I think I must have bad taste, somehow I like coins that others don't, e.g. koala as well :D

that was my original intention after getting the 12 display box, but the paper box for individual coins are very nice compared to S1...that is the reason I continue with a box set instead of just plain capsule+cert.

I am buying the koala, they are relatively cheaper than ase recently on the coin fair here recently.

In answer to the original question I don't think that the Gilded Lunar Mouse Series II is a sleeper. However I personally think that the Gilded Series II will be a very nice numismatic to own. And the cost spread out over the years makes it affordable the earlier you get in.
